Dear Newsletter Readers,

To the Table of Contents

in this issue of the www.AVP-Newsletter.com you will find news about data- and videoprojection/- presentation as well as video conference markets and LED large display systems.

1) AVP-Newsletter online-survey

This is the last issue for the year 2002. It was a very turbulent year, many companies had to deal with setbacks in our branch. Therefore, the editorial team is all the more pleased with your excellent support, with your interest as a reader and last but not least with your comments and contributions. We would especially like to thank all those who participated in our online survey. The winner of the trip to Barcelona will be announced in the next issue of the AVP-Newsletter. This person will be contacted and informed by our cooperation partner InterConnection Consulting who carried out the survey.

Here a result of the AVP online-survey (15.11-9.12) in advance: the top of the list of Free Recall (“name all the projector brands that you can think of spontaneously”) which included brands that were not active on the projector market. Sony had a popularity rate of 54%, NEC with 50% and EPSON with 41%.

The consumers are well-informed about the different positions of the brands, which was confirmed by the response to brand affinity: Barco, for example, is the brand leader in the sector of „fixed installation projectors“, Sony followed by Toshiba and Philips turned out to be the leader of portable devices as well as of home entertainment products.

Noticeable was the increasing importance of the internet as a medium especially with regards to purchase: 58% of the respondents informed themselves online about the projector market.

Our editorial team wishes all of our readers happy holidays, a merry Christmas as well as a very happy and healthy start into the new year 2003!!!

Enjoy reading the AVP-Newsletter! The next issue will be published on January 7th, 2003.

Best regards,

Wolfgang Schölermann

3) HITACHI: 50” Plasma - high contrast + light as day

4) Canon LV-S2/-X2: lightweights for mobile operations

Both new Canon projectors LV-S2 (SVGA) und LV-X2 (XGA) introduced themselves with their new attractive design, a 1,4 times wide angle zoom lens and an improved LCD panel. With 1,000 or respectively 1,100 ANSI lumens both models offer the same high luminous intensity as their predecessors. Next to the usage of extremely light components, the surface mirror designed by Canon as well as the 3P color prisma clearly stand out. The surface mirror optimises the direction of the red light and underlines the compact construction. The 3P clear-prisma minimizes image irritations for moving images. The keystone correction enables a vertical correction. Thanks to the zoom lens (Factor 1,4x, focal length 20,3 mm) you only need a projection distance between 2.8 and 4 meters. Both projectors are available.

5) Sharp VX-Z90E: home game for cinema fans

The popcorn is ready, the DVD “Vanilla Sky” with Tom Cruise is inserted, friends are sitting comfortably on the sofa: the beginning of an exciting film evening. The leading actor is the home cinema projector XV-Z90E by Sharp. It proves star qualities especially because of the Digital Light Processing technique, DLP for short. This makes an extremely sharp picture possible and guarantees an impressive contrast ratio of 1,200:1. The new 2D Keystone-technology is also an “Oscar candidate” because it makes sure that the projector can be put to the side of the projecting screen – up to an angle of up to 29° horizontally. Nevertheless the picture stays absolutely symmetrical and does not show any distortions. The XV-Z90E also convinces because it is extremely quiet. Because of its optimised, two-sided ventilating system it is able to keep down the noise level to only 29 dB. The XV-Z90E becomes the favourite projector for all home cinema fans because of its outer appearance and the extraordinary price-performance ratio. It will be available for 2,999€ (suggested retail price) in all specialized shops from December onwards.

7) IC: Plasma Monitor Panel +12,3% in Q3

The market for plasma monitors extends rapidly as it is shown in the most recent study of the European marketing research institute InterConnection. The market for plasma monitors shows a 12,3% increase compared to the second quarter in Europe, the Near East and Africa. 46,987 devices were sold between July and September 2002 and only 41,818 during the second quarter. Great Britain and Germany suffer from heavier losses in the professional area at the moment. The big customers like airports or banks delay their investments until later. Many things depend on the crisis in the Near East. In case of a war against the Iraq the rising prices for oil would keep on holding down the whole economic demand. Compared to this, the home cinema area was able to compensate for what had been lost for in the professional area (+12,4% compared to the second quarter). The main reason for this is the constant drop in prices of plasma monitors. Christmas sales have just started, so that one could get home cinema devices for less than 4,000 € in the big chain stores. The study “Plasma Monitors in Europe 2002-3”, which contains 450 pages, is available for 4500€.

8) CommTec: projection screens now in HDTV format

The overwhelming demand of COMM-TEC screens from the Master Series caused an expansion in the product range. Especially in the home entertainment sector, the manual WallMaster as well as the electromotoric ElectricMaster were included in the production range. Both have HDTV formats with 92" and 106" diagonal. The ElectricMaster Series was additionally extended by two square formats: 178 cm˛ and 213 cm˛. These formats are intended for both business as well as private usage. A perfect projection depends on many factors. The projection screen is the most important factor, testifying to the performance of the projector. The projection screens are made of high-quality materials, therefore they are ideal for day-to-day usage be that at home or in the office. The white matted projection surfaces have a superb reflection ratio as well as an even light dispersion and therefore guarantee bright projection results.

13) EPSON: Computer BILD test winner EMP-TS10

The magazine Computer Bild tested 8 projectors up to 3.000 € in issue 24/2002. The winner of this test was the EPSON EMP-TS 10. Not only has the projector an excellent picture quality but   the EPSON EMP-TS10 also is the only projector (of the tested ones), which is equipped with a lit remote control. As it was confirmed by Computer Bild, all the other remote controls had to be operated “blindly” in the dark. Furthermore it is emphasized that the EPSON projector is able to make a vertical and horizontal “trapezoid correction”. This means, that not only can it illuminate the screen from a position above or below the screen, but also from the sides, without any distortions. The extraordinary contrast and the detailed image representation should be especially mentioned, too. Computer Bild is also of the opinion that the buttons on the projector can be easily operated and are clearly arranged.

14) Kick-Off for the SHOWTECH (7.-9.5.2003)

A challenging economic climate always demands creative solutions. At SHOWTECH this applies both to the exhibitors and their customers who, despite reduced budgets, are still expecting to see impressive technical productions. And the organiser, Messe Berlin Reed GmbH, also has to come up with new ideas. For the 11th International Trade Show and Conference for Event and Media Engineering the international trade show and conference for event and media engineering, this means using extensive information forums to showcase future technical solutions to the industry. For example, two of the four forums at the conference, which is free of charge for visitors, will now for the first time be held in the middle of the exhibition itself.  Alongside the latest developments in the industry the spotlight will also be on management topics designed to shape up the show and event sector for the future. Both exhibitors and associations have expressed a desire for the event to become more international in nature. To this end there will be an international forum where all presentations will be interpreted simultaneously into English. Project Manager Britta Wirtz is pleased with the sales and exhibitor figures: "We are roughly 30 percent up in comparison to the figures for stand space sold in the same period two years ago..."

23) NEC: Four Point Theft protection for MT1060/65

Especially professional projectors installed at trade fairs, conferences and in schools receive a lot of attention- sometimes too much. Technicians always have to take into account that pickpockets and jokers might change the settings. NEC has therefore designed a four-point security system that allows stressed administrators in future to sleep better: the up to 3,200 ANSI lumens bright projectors MT1060 and MT1065 offer four layered backup fuses. To protect them against unauthorised usage and theft, up to five PC cards can be registered as hardware-keys per projector. A projector will only react to the keyboard and menu-functions when a PC-card is in the shaft and a password has been given. Not only via password security and PC-card identification, but also via a start-up-logo can the NEC projectors be protected. The projector then signals whom it belongs to. The fourth protection measure is the keyboard lock, which hinders children or unauthorised persons to change the projector settings.

36) MEDIA! AG: Quarterly Report Q1 in 2002/2003

The economic situation still burdens the business development of the MEDIA! AG in the first three months of the business year 2002/2003 (1.July to 30.September 2002). Especially in the event service area the lasting retention from trade fair exhibitors and the reduction of the trade fair budget bear negatively upon the sales. The area of the production services has, against the common trend, stayed stable, which is a result of the longer lasting cooperation contracts with TV channels and production companies. In the area of fixed installations & distribution services the request for electronic advertisement and presentation surfaces also endures. But manufacturers still have problems configurating marketable products. The department for equipment for conference rooms and rooms used for educational purposes shows an intensive competition. In this area many specialised small companies profit from advantages due to less fixed costs and a geographically good company location. Nevertheless a first positive sign could be seen during the course of the reconstruction process. The results before taxes, interests and
