SYSTEMS 2002 – Concluding remarks: decline in visitors and exhibitors

In the face of the generally hard economical times especially in IT and communication branches, the SYSTEMS clearly experienced a decline in visitors (-32%) and exhibitors (-25%). 1600 companies presented their novelties. Despite the difficult initial situation the exhibitors were content. They were able to contact a large number of top managers among the approximately 80,000 visitors (in 2002: 117,000 visitors according to the FKM count).

" We collected high-quality leads, our expectations were fulfilled", commented Andreas Schulze, Marketing Manager of Adito, on the course of the fair. Norbert Dorn, Advertising manager of Kindermann commented: "The first three days were not too bad- if things continue like this until Friday, we will be quite content. However we had hoped for more dialogue with the specialized trade dealers."

After last year’s SYSTEMS the course of business in IT and Telecommunication branches drastically declined (39% of the exhibitors perceive the contemporary economic situation as poor, in 2001 there were only 23%). This year at the SYSTEMS there was a mood swing: 47% perceived the SYSTEMS 2002 as being excellent or good.  Last year this percentage lay at 43%. This was underpined by a current visitor survey conducted by the NFO, which stated that the SYSTEMS 2002 could clearly improve in all relevant areas: approximately 90% of the specialized visitors are those who make decisions (in 2001: 86%), 49% have leading positions (in 2001: 45%) and 30% are from the management ( in 2001: 24%).  Among 30% of the SYSTEMS-Professionals have an investment volume of over 100,000 €, more than 55% do not visit any other IT trade fair. The SYSTEMS 2003 took place between 20th and 24th October 2003 at the “Neue Messe Munich”.

2) Fujitsu: Plasmadisplays receive the EMMY Award

As the first manufacturer of plasma displays, Fujitsu General received the EMMY Award for the production series of PLASMAVISION Plasmadisplays. The award was presented by U.S. "National Association of Television Arts and Sciences" (NATAS). The exact title of the award was: "2002 Scientific Development and Technological Achievement EMMY Award", and merits the longstanding technical development and achievements of the American television industry. The background for the choice of Fujitsu General PLASMAVISION Displays as the winner of this year’s awards was the longstanding development and marketing of plasmadisplays, which began long before the first 21” Fujitsu Plasma color display (1993) and took its course with 42” color- plasmas (1996) and the high resolution ALIS plasmas (1999). In 2001 Fujitsu General introduced AVM (Advanced Video Movement) Technology, which ensures highest image quality for the Fujitsu Plasmavision devices. The EMMY Award is an incentive to continue offering innovative solutions in the future in the field of large format, flat plasma displays.

7) Metz: First- and Second vote for Metz KRETA 63

Already in September 120 Metz TVs were installed in the German Parliament. After the official advertisement of the job profile it became clear that the individual and convertible Metz TVs would be ideal. Special attention was given to the retrofitting capability of the DVB-T modules. By the year 2003 the analog reception will be substituted by a digital one in Berlin and in the surrounding area. This is no problem for Metz TVs – they can easily be retrofitted by a specialist dealer with a DVB-T socket module. Therefore a digital reception without a Set-Top Box is possible. Another advantage: no further remote controls are necessary. Especially the KRETA 63 was very impressive, because it offers this merit for a screen size of only 63 cm (only 59cm are visible).  The nearest CE specialist dealer will take care of current software updates. In Berlin it is already certain that more appliances are soon to follow.

23) Mitsubishi: 50-inch display with DLP technology

Mitsubishi Electric is launching a new development, a 50 inch Display-Cube (VS-50FD10U) with TI’s one-chip DLP-technology. The Display achieves a brightness of 500cd/m² and has a contrast ratio of 300:1. The DMD is a reflecting semiconductor device and therefore not prone to heat absorption even when frozen images or patterns are shown for a longer period of time. Thanks to this technology no burning-in effects occur. The display VS-50FD10U offers a lamp life of approximately 8,000 hours with a 100W UHP mercury lamp and was developed for the greatest amount of reliability even under the most difficult conditions.

TLS Communication demonstrated yet another new product development: the TLS SignalManager at the photokina 2002. The TLS SignalManager with a video band of 500 MHz (-3 dB) is a device for adjusting VGA signals. It can be used whenever VGA signals and/or horizontal and vertical synchronised impulses have to be refreshed and strengthened. TLS offers two versions- the SignalManager 500 and the SignalManager 500 XL. The SignalManager 500 can be plugged directly into the graphics card of a computer or notebook in order to refresh the signal for longer distances directly at the source. The SignalManager 500 XL is used for the variable signal adjustment with longer lengths of cable. A DIP switch enables a 4-level signal adjustment. Both projectors have a VGA signal input recognition and a power ON indicator.
