Dear Newsletter Readers,

Table of Contents

In this issue of www.AVP-Newsletter.com you will find the latest news concerning video projection /- presentation, videoconference market and LED- large image systems. We will present this autumn`s novelties, which were shown at the photokina and are yet to be presented at the Systems.

photokina – concluding remarks: despite the downward trend-a huge success

This year`s photokina in Cologne ended on September 30th with mainly positive results for the 1,546 suppliers from 46 countries. More than 160,000 visitors from 136 countries, of which one quarter was from abroad, came to obtain thorough and targeted information. The photokina`s new presentation with its extended selection, action centers and attractive highlights during the supporting programme delighted many visitors. “Our concept became a huge success", said Bernd Aufderheide, manager of the CologneMesse GmbH, „ the photokina reached a larger audience and pointed the way to the future”.

In spite of the generally difficult economic situation, the exhibitors in the Center for Professional Media/ InfoComm Europe rated the course of the photokina as positive. Many arrived in Cologne with low expectations considering the weak  turnovers during the past year.  “Our apprehensions were not justified, the trade fair went very well", was a statement heard at many booths. The trade fair was judged by some as being “considerably better than two years ago”. Quality, qualification, international character and target group mixture were highly praised elements on the part of the visitors. Many exhibitors look forward to promising business arrangements after the show.

Among the highlights were compact large screen projectors, plasma-displays with more than 60“ diagonal, video projection on glass as well as home- cinema applications. In 2004 the photokina Cologne- World of Imaging- will be held from Tuesday, September 28th until Sunday, October 3rd.

Have fun reading and see you at the next edition!

Sincerely, Wolfgang Schölermann

3) Liesegang-Insolvency: It goes on!

After the attempt failed to rehabilitate the Ed. Liesegang oHG as oHG, the management filed the application for insolvency at the district court in Düsseldorf on 24/09/2002. The business of the Ed. Liesgang oHG will be continued by means of the developed rehabilitation concept. The distribution-transfer of all Liesegang products to a new affiliated company “Liesegang Optoelectronics GmbH” is included in the rehabilitation concept. This new company will not only carry all service performances but will still supply the national and international markets. Because the banks have made an assurance for the granting of a mass credit, the post treatment of the traditional company is safe. Therefore Liesegang presents itself self-confidently at the Systems fair in Munich with the new products soho 21, Luxor II, dv255, dv455, dv500 and dv550 from October, 14 – 18. 2002.

4) Folsom: New Technology for Wide-Screen Presentations

Folsom Research has introduced BlendPRO, a new Wide-Screen Image Processor. BlendPRO accepts high-resolution video from up to four sources and processes the input to generate overlapped and edge-feathered images suitable for driving up to four projectors. The result is a seamless wide-screen output image. The size of the blend regions and the characteristics of the blending transfer functions are user programmable. To complement the introduction of new image processing features, Folsom is introducing a new generation of controllers that support advanced features and control up to 6 screens. They provide intuitive controls to support high performance multi-screen presentations. You can see the BlendPRO and the other new product offerings at SATIS 2002 October 22-24 at the Paris Expo.

5) Canon: 5 percent for educational facilities

The deficits of the education system are very well known. Very often these deficits are not only a question of learning and teaching but also a question of the available teaching appliances. Therefore Canon offers a 5 percent-discount for all projectors. Thereby, the company wants to pay a contribution to the field of education but also offers excellent presentation possibilities to different teaching methods. Modern teaching and learning methods require the use of appropriate technologies. Regardless whether schools, advanced training facilities, universities, teaching- or training associations – the projector-discount will be valid for every educational facility. The premise is a certificate of an official facility. Private institutes have to present a copy of their association membership or a copy of their IHK-entry.

6) Garbo – the new homecinema projector by Philips

Philips presents the successor of the price-winning home cinema projector Monroe: the Garbo. The Garbo fascinates because of its brilliant image performance with very natural colours, high contrast and is specialized in video applications. The play-back of 16:9 sources like DVDs in their original large screen format with the highest resolution at the same end. Furthermore, the Garbo impresses because of its almost noiseless operation (27 dB), low operation costs due to a long lamp lifetime (6000 hours) and its elegant, modern design. Therefore the Garbo is not only home cinema projector but it is also perfect for computer games, TV-shows and for surfing the internet. 1,25 million pixel (858 x 484 x 3 panel) on 0,65” high performance LCD panels, SVGA resolution, a contrast ratio of 400:1 and a light intensity of 1000 ANSI lumens are the capacity values of the Garbo for natural and excellent image performance.

7) New: Sony VPL-CS5 +CX5 with MemoryStick-feature

The new Sony projectors combine noble design, light intensity and innovative features with a very attractive price/performance ratio. The VPL-CX5 makes presentations possible without a notebook. Thanks to the MemoryStick – the user can go on a journey with half of his normal baggage. Out of the projector’s memory-slot, the presentation can be started and controlled with the remote control that is equipped with a mini joystick. The VPL-CX5 has a XGA resolution and a brilliant light intensity of 2000 ANSI lumens. The VPL-CS5 is the new low end model of the B2B-projectors by Sony and provides an excellent performance of 1800 ANSI lumens and SVGA resolution. Apart from its compact housing and the small weight (both 2,7 kg), both projectors are easy to install and handle. 12) dnp Holo Foil – transparent eyecatcher in shop windows

dnp showed a product novelty at the photokina in Cologne from 25 - 30. September– the dnp stickable Holo Foil. The ultra thin foil is a version of the existing Holo Screen. The advantage of this foil is the direct putting on and taking off on shop windows and other glass surfaces so that it is possible to use the foil again and again in different locations. For an easy mounting/dismounting of the stickable Holo Foil will be supplied with a complete mounting. This is perfect for shops and centres with changing exhibitions, varying decoration or rental companies. The specifications of the stickable Holo Foil are identical with those of the dnp Holo Screen. 13) GMK: VAN DER ROLLE – the presentation wallpaper

The company GMK presented at the photokina in Cologne VAN DER ROLLE - an innovative way to easily create rooms into communicative places. You only have to put it on like wallpaper and very soon a wall turns into a projection screen, a whiteboard or a magnetic board. Only materials of the highest qualities are used during the manufacture of VAN DER ROLLE. Because of the very accurate coating technique, a 100% smooth and even coating of the vinyl base is achieved. The result is a surface without any spots, stains or microscopic holes in which ink rests, dirt and paint thinner could be sedimented. This would lead to durable discolouration. The key to this coating technique is the use of teflon, the high performance-theromplastic coating by DuPont. It shapes a surface that is extraordinarily resistant against stains and impenetrable for paint thinners. Moreover, it lasts longer than usual coatings. Dirt and stains can easily be wiped away with a piece of cloth, a sponge a soft cleaning agent, or a soft soap.

19) eyevis: MIC – the wide-ranging conference room

Analysis have shown that most the business people spend at least 25% of their working day in meetings, while directors even spend 4/5 of their working hours in conferences. eyevis presents with the MIC (Management Information Centre) a wide-ranging conference room solution, which has been designed with the aim to clearly edit the flood of information, to structure obviously and to present interactively. The technical argument for the decision to use a video wall is very simple. Back projection units can maintain their good contrast level even under high ambient light. As long as the natural or artificial light does not shine directly on the projection area the images will possess extremely good contrast and extraordinary colour saturation, apart from the good brightness.

23) WolfVision: Ceiling-Visualizer now available

At the photokina 2002 in Cologne WolfVision showed for the first time the final model of the “Ceiling Visualizers VZ-C10”, which already could be marvelled as prototype at the InfoComm in Las Vegas. It is the first device of this kind. There is not only a camera in the ceiling – it is a complete visualizer. The basic idea of the “Ceiling Visualizer” is to keep the table or rostrum free so that there is no obstruction between the speaker and the audience. No cables from table to device, objects can be much larger and much higher and with an optional light box it is possible to record the biggest radiograms (42 x 35 cm)! The Ceiling Visualizer can be installed on the ceiling like a projector. In its design the Ceiling Visualizer adapts itself at best to modern data projectors. The most popular feature of WolfVision`s professional Visualizer series has been adapted for the Ceiling Visualizer VZ-C10. The synchronized light field marks the absorption field of the camera. Thereby it is easy for the speaker to place the copies in the right position. The first devices of this production series will be on the market in November 2002. The suggested retail price will be Euro 9,860.-.

26) KAROW TV: Leipzig wins Porsche

Nice weather and an ideal organisation in the early morning already give hints that the opening of the new Porsche-works in Leipzig is going to be an extraordinarily impressive event. Marcus Groll, project leader, KAROW TV, who is in charge of the whole technical realisation of the media- light- acoustic and traverse technology, as well as the creators of Porsche are suffering from a healthy stage fright. The audience at the Porsche Parcours and in front of the televisions at home does not miss a thing: eleven TV-live-cameras, some of them on a 65 metre high platform, some as steady cam and some operated via radio from a 200 km/h fast racing car transmit every movement to the radio and TV stations. Two Sony JTS 15 LED walls (34m² big) guarantee an absolutely brilliant image representation. It is always a special challenge to realize such a complex event for a customer who takes perfection for granted in his advertising messages. The opening of the Porsche works has been a great success for everyone involved.

39) InFocus/Schell-Marketing: Meetings are better than their reputation

How content are European managers and employees with business meetings? Which factors contribute to a successful or unsuccessful business conference? The answer to these questions was given by a multinational survey, which was conducted by the Shell Marketing Consulting, in Munich on demand by the InFocus Corporation. 58.1 percent of those asked in Europe responded that meetings are productive. The most positive attitude was held by the British with 61.3 percent. Furthermore the Swedish followed with 60.2 percent and then the French with 59.5 percent affirming the productivity of meetings. In Germany only 51.7 held this opinion- clearly here a optimizing potential can be found. The employees and the management are approximately 3.2 times per week in a meeting. The results of the survey prove that meetings are generally seen more positive than was expected- a process which is also pushed by the usage of modern technologies. Nevertheless the survey clearly demonstrates that there is room for improvement, after all according to the survey 41.9 percent of the European average still perceive meetings as being unproductive.

41) IC Panel: Projectors in Europe 1 HJ / 2002

The last years had produced very good sales for projector manufactures altogether the market developed rather disappointingly in the first half of the year 2002 particularly because of the economic depression. In the EMEA-Market (Europe & Middle East) 301,000 projectors had been sold in total, the best growth rate with 85% in comparison to the last year was in the Home-Cinema segment. Regionally considered, Germany remains with a total sale of 61,216 projectors the largest market, but the sales market could only be increased by 1,7 percent in comparison to the second half of 2001. Also France, the third largest market only achieved 4,4 percent. Great Britain and Ireland resisted these trends (23,3% = 59.131 pieces). In all Western European states 267,322 projectors had been sold after 252,003 (+6,07%) in the second half year 2001. In the different target groups the “Mobile Office” is by far the largest area, but the draw of field in regards of growth is “Home Cinema”. While the areas “Conference Room” will increase with 13,5% (302,646 pieces in 2001 to 343,261 in 2002) and “Mobile Office” will put on 17,5%, the comparatively small “Home Cinema” segment will grow only to 85% (from 54,949 pieces in 2001 to 101,560 in 2002). The 350 pages long IC-MARKET MONITOR Panel “PROJECTORS IN EUROPE” is immediately available by the InterConnection Consulting Group for 3,900,- €.

42) Samsung- large display sets record

According to its producer Samsung the new plasma display PS-42 P2ST sets new records. The huge display (display diagonal 42”) with a depth of 89 millimetres is uniquely flat. The extremely small cabinet gives the impression of a free floating image if the display is fixed to the wall. Samsung calls this effect “Flying Windows”. The screen format of 16:9 supports six different picture formats: normal, wide, panorama, zoom 1 and 2 as well as stretch. Even if the surrounding light is very bright the representation on the plasma display stays excellent because of a light intensity of 600 Candelar per square metre. The contrast of 700:1 produces an extraordinarily sharp picture. The resolution of 852 x 480 pixel with 1,677 millions of different colours creates a detailed image representation. One is still able to overlook the whole screen even from a slanted perspective of up to 160°.
