1)      IFA: Even most ambitious expectations exceeded

The preliminary IFA summary makes it clear: More than ever before the IFA 2005 demonstrated its suitability as the leading meeting place for European and international CE experts and, to an increasing extent, for the IT and telecommunications industries too. “The world’s leading fair for consumer electronics (CE) is the pre-eminent marketing platform and attracts senior executives in particular“, according to Dr. Christian Göke, Chief Operating Officer of Messe Berlin. ”We are more than satisfied with the excellent response to this event.“ This was demonstrated above all by the participation by the presidents and CEOs of all the main international companies in the CE industry at the IFA 2005. At this year’s leading fair for the CE sector 1,202 exhibitors from 40 countries occupied over 160,000 square metres of display space. The organisers, Gesellschaft für Unterhaltungs- und Kommunikationselektronik (gfu), and Messe Berlin report that not only has here been an increase in the number of exhibitors and in the display area, but there was also a double-digit rise in attendance by trade visitors. Particular mention should be made of the fact that, compared with 2003, there was a 56 per cent increase in registrations from international trade visitors. Around half of all trade visitors consisted of leading buyers and specialist dealers. The IFA 2005 thus continues to set new standards among consumer electronics trade fairs, and has met with an enthusiastic response by the trade. Over 90 per cent of trade visitors are extremely satisfied with the range of items offered at this year’s IFA, and also emphasise the positive developments in sales and business contacts. Exhibitors at this year’s IFA are extremely satisfied with their commercial results and the effectiveness of this event as a means of communicating their corporate message. The IFA has proved to be the ideal commercial forum for the CE sector and stimulates the desire for innovations. “The volume of orders even surpassed the most optimistic expectations“, according to Dr. Rainer Hecker, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the gfu. “Orders exceeded the volume achieved at the IFA 2003. Most of the major exhibitors are reporting a double-digit rise in the volume of orders.” Particular highlights included HDTV and DVB-H, DVD recorders, MP3 components and innovations in the field of digital photography. Demand was especially high for large screen LCD televisions (32 inch and larger) and for plasma TV sets of 40 or more inches. Ordering activity also focused on navigation and hi-fi equipment. Particular mention should also be made of the keen interest shown by the trade in traditional stereo phonics. Hans-Joachim Kamp, member of the Supervisory Board of the gfu, Chairman of the Consumer Electronics trade association in the ZVEI and Chairman of the Board of the IFA stated: “The IFA 2005 again demonstrated that it is the main event for consumer electronics. The IFA 2005 helped to give a substantial boost to growth for the coming year’s business and for the 2006 Football World Cup.” According to a poll of exhibitors more than half of those questioned judged the development of the industry to have been significantly improved as a result of the IFA 2005. As a result of the information that they obtained at the IFA 2005 some 85 per cent of visitors are planning to purchase consumer electronics products.

2)      Texas Instruments: DLP 1080p chips

On the CEDIA trade show in Indianapolis, Texas Instruments recently presented new DLP chips for projectors featuring 1080p resolution. The new DLP chips offer a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The video format 1080 becomes a standard in numerous high resolution applications, such as in television, game consoles and video players of the upper segment. Manufacturers can choose between DLP chips in 1080p resolution for 1 chip- or 3 chip applications and can therefore equip their devices with all-time picture quality.

3)      Liesegang dv .485 – combining economy with power

Launched as the successor to the dv 410, the Liesegang dv•485 is compact, powerful and inexpensive. With a luminous power of 2500 ANSI lumens and an extensive array of interfaces – for two computers, three video inputs and a separate monitor output –, the XGA projector is particularly suitable for professional presentations in small to medium-sized conference rooms. Its individually adjustable colour management system, which also allows true colour representation, makes the Liesegang dv •485 the best choice for use in the field of education, e.g. in art colleges. In comparison to its predecessor, the dv •485 boasts a higher contrast ratio at 500:1. Weighing in at 3.5 kg, it is also considerably lighter and more compact, making this LCD projector suitable for portable use too. The audio input assignment is freely programmable, enabling any audio channel to be selected when playing back the desired image sequence. Video presentations are optimally projected by the Liesegang dv •485 with the help of the Progressive Scan function (de-interlacing).

4)      Eiki: EIP-2500 for business- and education areas

The EIP-2500 is a DLP projector that has been designed for the business and education area. It is equipped with a 0.55“ DLP chip based on latest DLP technology. Featuring a brightness of 2500 ANSI lumens and a contrast ratio of 2000:1 this device is suitable for mobile presentations as well as for fixed installations in small and medium sized conference rooms. Above that it is also applicable in home cinema. Its versatility is mirrored in five different image modes alone: standard, presentation, cinema, game and sRGB. To facilitate projector set up in changing environments EIKI integrated a memory function into the EIP-2500. This function allows for the saving of individual picture modes. Thanks to a low noise level of 30 dB in ECO mode the EIP-2500 can be perfectly used in the living room. This whisper quite noise level has been achieved by changing the colour wheel motor, which now runs by air flow instead of ball bearing. An integrated support programme offers immediate help and advice in trouble shooting. In economical ECO mode featuring approximately 87% of the original brightness, the lamp life span can be enhanced to up to 3000 hours. This lamp energy saving mode is especially advantageous in environments with little incidence of light. With the EIKI NPC-1 interface (optionally available) the EIP-2500 becomes network compatible. NPC-1 enables operation, control and remote maintenance of the projector via TCP/IP network. Any fault can be automatically sent to assigned email addresses. This allows for quick and precise reaction to potential failures.

5)      Canon: new business projectors

The LV-7240 and the LV-7245 represent new multimedia business projectors featuring automatic keystone correction, high resolution and a contrast ratio of 300:1. The lamp performance of 2100 ANSI lumens with the LV-7240 and 2500 ANSI lumens with the LV-7245 enable projections even in bright rooms and at large distances. Wall Colour Correction preserves the original image colours when projecting onto coloured surfaces. The projector's wide-angle 1.2x zoom lens lets users achieve an image diagonal of 2.5 meters at a throwing distance of only 3 meters. A 300:1 contrast ratio means images are super crisp with brighter whites, darker blacks and richer colours. The XGA resolution (1024 x 768) for razor sharp definition is extendable with high-quality compression to UXGA (1600 x 1200). Both projectors use progressive scanning which ensures that projections remain smooth, steady and flicker-free. RGB output allows connection to an external prompt monitor so users never have to turn their back on their audience. The Remote Control has a USB infrared receiver that can control the mouse cursor of a laptop from up to 7 metres away.

6)      Toshiba’s world premiere at IFA

Toshiba Projection & Display Technology (PDT) presented its new LED projector for the first time at IFA Berlin. Brand new on the market, the LED technology opens up a new world of possibilities for mobile digital projection at negligible operating costs. The DLP™ -based projector does not use a lamp as its light source, but LED technology. LEDs (light emitting diodes) have a major advantage over conventional projector lamps: they have ultra-low energy consumption, a feature which revolutionizes the whole design, and thus the potential applications, of the LED Projector. The “projector of the future” delivers full output on battery power alone for up to two hours; combined with its ultra-compact design weighing approximately 500 gramms – under half the size of conventional devices - it’s the perfect companion for maximum mobility. In addition, the projector’s LED technology significantly reduces operating costs: LEDs produce minimum heat and have a far longer operating life than projector lamps, eliminating the major investment factor of new lamps. But despite its small appetite, this almost noiseless mini-projector is a real powerhouse when it comes to presentations. Designed for data and video projection, the LED Projector is ideal for mobile conferencing, but also ideal for home cinema. Included in delivery is an accu and a foldable screen offering a ready for use all-in-one-solution for mobile projections.
