viscom frankfurt 2008 is the
biggest
It will
be the biggest viscom ever held in Frankfurt: the International Trade Fair
for Visual Communication will open with more than 260 exhibitors at the end
of October. Enlarging the exhibition area by ten percent had already become
necessary back in June; now the space occupied by the companies is more than
60 percent larger than at the previous event held in 2006 (at that time still
under the name PRO SIGN). “With this excellent result, viscom emphasizes its
function as the leading trade fair for visual communication,“ explains viscom
Director Petra Lassahn. Meanwhile, the driving forces are not only the
‘classic’ fields of advertising technology, light advertising and large
format digital printing, but also new fields such as digital signage and
industrial inkjet printing. More:

Technology at viscom 2008
3M, the
diversified technology company, will demonstrate its innovative DST touch
technology for large-format interactive displays at viscom 2008 in
Frankfurt/Germany. MicroTouch DST touch screens have been available since
January 1st 2008 in popular 32”, 40”, 42”and 46” screen sizes to integrators
across Europe. Based on 3M’s patented Dispersive Signal Technology (DST),
MicroTouch DST touch screens offer integrators an ideal solution for
large-format interactive displays in most digital signage applications
including point-of-information, retail point-of-sale, scoreboards, conference
rooms and education presentation systems. Dispersive Signal Technology
recognises touch by interpreting bending waves within the glass substrate
created by the contact of a finger or stylus on the glass. Since bending
waves are unaffected by on-screen contaminants and moderate surface damage,
DST touch screens are inherently robust making them a compelling solution for
customers in many of today’s high productivity, vertical applications. viscom Frankfurt 2008: Hall 3.0, stand E26 More:

http://www.axxent.de 20) Audica Professional installed for
Warsaw University of Technology
Audica
Professional loudspeakers and amplifier/controllers have been installed in
one of the Warsaw University of Technology’s most historic and prestigious
rooms, primarily used for conferences and recognized as a flagship conference
facility in Warsaw. The system was designed and installed by Tommex, Audica
Professional’s exclusive distributor for Poland. In addition to requiring the
highest possible sound quality, the loudspeakers had to merge technology with
the elaborate historic architecture of the room and Tommex proposed Audica
MICROline and MICROpoint for their slim unobtrusive shape and neutral colour.
The University readily accepted this proposal aesthetically, but the system had
to be proved with the most accurate acoustic modelling before even a mark
could be made on the historic walls. The system in the eight metre high
Auditorium uses a distributed system, with ten MICROlines in pairs forming
the basis of the system. MICROlines ability to be directed as required by
their unique mounting bracket with no fixing or wires showing was an
important feature in meeting both aesthetic and acoustic requirements. The
MICROlines are controlled and driven by three MICROzone controller/amplifiers.
With the MICROlines providing even and consistent coverage, with good
intelligibility and level throughout the room, Tommex added a pair of larger
Dynacord D8 loudspeakers at the front to provide focus. Audica Professional
MICROpoint loudspeakers provide additional fill and Klark Tecknik electronics
were used for signal processing and room equalisation. More:

Control Room Monitoring capability
With
rising demand for alternative energy sources, geothermal power production is
a fast growing, environmentally prudent power solution. A leading regional
geothermal power plant company in the western U.S. is utilizing cutting-edge
audio-visual technology in its control rooms to monitor its expanding
geothermal facilities. Vision Control Associates, a systems integration firm
based in Las Vegas, was hired to design and install sophisticated A/V
equipment in the company's first control room upgrade. Randy Premetz, President
of Vision Control Associates, described the project, "The objective of
the control room upgrade is to provide personnel with a variety of real time
visual data in a centralized area for more efficient and productive visual
resource management. The key was to be able to present a number of live
computer-generated process control information and monitoring video on single
screens for correlated viewing. To achieve this, we chose RGB Spectrum's
QuadView XL multi-image display processor. This processor is the heart of the
control room's display system. The QuadView is ideal for this application
because it supports a wide range of signals and consolidates these images
into a multi-window display arrangement in real time. It also meets the
client's 24/7 mission critical display requirements." The power
facility's control room is equipped with two QuadView multi-image display
processors fed a combination of computer and video sources routed through a
matrix switcher. Each processor can be sent any of twelve signal sources,
including SCADA power generation and process information and human-machine
interface (HMI) imagery as well as CCTV cameras stationed around the complex. More:

S+20K in the city of Quebec
Christie
projectors played a key role for the 400th anniversary of the city of Quebec,
the birthplace of French civilization in North America and a UNESCO World
Heritage site. From June 20 to August 24 Christie participated in The Image
Mill (Le Moulin à Images) – a sound and image spectacular created by Robert
Lepage and Ex Machina. Each evening at 10pm, E/T/C Paris, a specialist in the
creation and implementation of technical solutions for automated image
projection, transformed the Port of Quebec’s 81 monumental Bunge company
grain elevators on the banks of the Bassin Louise in the Old Port into an
immense projection screen – the ultimate in widescreen viewing. The Image
Mill was visible from many vantage points, including across the St. Lawrence
River. To accomplish the feat, E/T/C Paris has installed 27 Christie Roadster
S+20K DLP projectors to create a continuous image measuring 657m long by 33m
high. E/T/C’s Onlyview®, a multimedia control platform, operated the programming,
transmission and broadcasting of more than 400 images, animations and videos
in the 40-minute show, as well as the synchronization of the soundtrack which
was simulcast on local radio station. The project, which has been two years
in the making at E/T/C and Ex Machina, is Lepage’s four-part vision of Quebec
history. Each part was devoted to a century from the 17th century-themed
Water Highway to today’s telecommunications-fueled Air Highway. Lepage has
said his idea was to make the grain silos transparent, to make the immense
structures move with the fluidity of the projected images. More:

focused on Soft Edge Blending
Analog
Way organized in July a new session of its training program Analog Days and
welcomed customers from different European and Middle Eastern countries to
offer them a training session focusing on Soft Edge Blending. To enhance the
service provided to its customers and the end users of its products, Analog
Way developed a training program called Analog Days. On July 23rd, Analog Way
was pleased to welcome customers from Poland, Russia and the United Arab
Emirates for a new session dedicated to Soft Edge Blending that took place in
its headquarters located in Paris. Soft Edge Blending consists of the set up
of a large screen image using multiple video projectors with overlapping
areas that make the seams between projectors invisible. The demand for this
type of installations and shows is rapidly growing due to the profound impact
of the presentations enabled by this technology. This application requires
specific techniques from the calculation of the screen size to the adjustment
of image parameters in order to obtain a perfect seamless image. During the
entire day, theoretical explanations of the SEB technology were presented as
well as practical cases with a SEB screen using Analog Way’s Di-VentiX, a
full digital computer and video up/down mixer scaler switcher, and the remote
controller Axion, with the opportunity for hands-on participation. More:
http://www.analogway.com 24) Futuresource: Explosive groth for
the Interactive Whiteboard market
A new
market report from Futuresource Consulting reveals explosive growth for the
interactive whiteboard market, with over 600,000 boards installed across the
globe during 2008, equating to a value in excess of US$1bn. Driven by
continued technological developments, and with one in six classrooms
worldwide forecast to be using the technology by 2012, interactive
whiteboards are taking the classroom by storm. These devices hook up to
computers and projectors to create large touch-sensitive displays which
integrate AV, graphics and text into the lesson structure, improving learning
by illustrating new concepts clearly and effectively, increasing pupil
motivation and aiding in lesson flow. “This technology is ideal for
classrooms as the teacher no longer has to arrange large groups around a
single computer screen,” says Colin Messenger, Senior Consultant,
Futuresource, “and governments are recognising this potential, with
record-breaking sales recorded last quarter – up more than 40% on last year
and the largest since we started tracking this market seven years ago.” In
the 66 countries covered within the report, Futuresource calculates there are
over 37 million classrooms: a huge market potential for companies operating
within this sector. More:
