Dear Newsletter Readers,

To the Table of Contents

in this edition of http://www.avp-newsletter.com/ we have the latest news about data- and video projection / presentation. Apart from new products you will find several manufacturers who are presenting their new chips resp. technologies for the AV market. We especially would like to draw your attention to the future topic HD TV. There will be two events that focus especially on this topic: 24th - 26th August HD TV-Forum, Insight Media, in California as well as 30th September - 1st October a scientific symposium on HD cinema and HD TV during photokina 2004 in Cologne, Germany.

1) High Definition TV - the future has begun

Insight Media Insight Media and DisplaySearch are going to host an HD TV forum from 24th to 26th August 2004 which is entitled "Accelerating the HD TV Transition". It will be taking place in the Westin Century Plaza hotel in Los Angeles. The organizers expect representatives of the TV and cable networks, government bodies, satellite and cable providers, retailers, distributors, TV brands, TV OEMs, panel/tube/engine manufacturers as well as IC manufacturers to be participating in the event. They all will have the possibility to exchange information concerning the emerging HD TV era.

Another opportunity to discuss the HD TV topic is offered at the photokina 2004 (28th September until 3rd October). A two day scientific symposium on HD cinema and DH TV will be taking place for the first time on 30th September and 1st October during photokina in the Koelnmesse Kristallsaal. On the symposium which is entitled "The World Championships 2006 in HD - High Definition Cinema and TV" all aspects from recording and editing up to playback and memory are going to be discussed. On the first day HD recording technology, editing, post-production, studio technology and transmission will be in the focus of discussion. On the second day participants will be dealing with themes regarding playback and memory. Among the symposium´s organizers are for example Institut fuer Rundfunktechnik IRT.

The HD TV issue has achieved a high priority in Europe over the past months. It was decided that the football world championships 2006 are going to be entirely produced in HD, and that they are going to be broadcast almost entirely in HD TV. Thus, the entire HD TV issue is about to turn into a major field of interest for producers, users, dealers and service providers within the film, TV and AV branch.

18)     Projektorreinigung.de - on-location projector cleaning

Projector cleaning - in order to make dust visible on LCD-projectors, the outer parts of the glass slides need to be focused. Dust accumulating on the optical parts of an LCD-projector can´t be avoided, not even with the help of an integrated dust filter. Apart from the derogation of picture quality dust can also damage mechanical projector components. This is why users should at least pay attention to cleaning the dust filter regularly. Damage of mechanical components caused by dust is generally not included in the warranty and thus has to paid by the customer himself. AVP, a Duesseldorf company, is offering on-location cleaning of all data- and video projectors. The advantages are clear: up to 80% less damage and projector life span is extended considerably.

27)     ict-system at the Tegel airport in Berlin

Visitors of the Berlin airport Tegel are being informed in multimedia for a short time. More than four large format split screen projections were installed between the gates and 27 plasma screens were put up at the departure gates. Visitors can now watch a mixture of flight information, world news and advertising on the system. The system was designed by 3G-Media (general contractor) and implemented by the ict AG. In order to realize split screen presentations, that are composed out of four individual segments each using different contents, the ict multimedia specialists used their own software TouchVision. Due to different requirements the plasma systems needed individual programming, which was also put up in a modular way on the author system TouchVision BASIC. 33)     Philips PolyLED TV prototype

Philips has recently demonstrated its first 13-inch PolyLED TV prototype based on polymer OLED (organic light-emitting diode) technology at the Society for Information Display´s International Symposium in Seattle, USA. Philips has produced a prototype 13-inch display (resolution 576x324) to demonstrate the feasibility of manufacturing large-screen polymer OLED displays using high-accuracy multi-nozzle, multi-head inkjet printers. The excellent and sparkling image quality of Philips´ PolyLED TV prototype illustrates the great potential of this new display technology for TV applications. According to current predictions, a polymer OLED-based TV could be a reality in the next five years. Polymer OLED display technology offers advantages over current LCD displays such as wide viewing angle and fast response time, excellent black-level performance and outstanding picture contrast. A polymer OLED display is an emissive display which means that it requires no backlight and can therefore be manufactured in exceptionally thin form-factors, enabling displays no thicker than a pane of glass.
