InterConnection: Plasma-TVs contra CRTs
Although
the European economy is currently undergoing a critical phase, one product
sector is able to claim large increases for itself: the market for plasma
monitors is growing continuously. And the trend is still pointing steeply
upwards, as the newest study by the European market research company
InterConnection shows. The study shows that 58,3 % think it’s likely that Plasma-TVs will
replace CRTs. Knowledge about the latest home cinema devices has immensely
increased and its popularity has grown. Compared to last year (50-85 %) today
more than 90 % are familiar with the
Plasma-TV technology. 75 % out of all asked people would like to have a
Plasma-TV home cinema. The main reason why they yet refrain from purchase is
the price. 58,3 % consider plasma TVs
and 71,1 % consider back projection devices as a replacement for a conventional TV set. The difference
between the two: Plasma TVs are more likely to be bought than back projectors
instead of higher costs because they require less space. LCD TVs are
favourites by only 49,1 % because they are not yet available for a long time
and people can’t foresee which direction development of LCD TVs will
take.

18) Panasonic/CBS/FOX: New news-systems for
DVCPRO
Panasonic has
announced that to assist in the productization of its new DVCPRO solid-state
memory card-based digital news system, it has entered into product
development assistance agreements with leading news media companies.
The three companies providing Panasonic with development assistance represent
a broad cross section of digital news acquisition applications and production

and Raycom Media. Panasonic’s new solid-state memory card-based DVCPRO news
system is based on the widely-adopted DVCPRO and DVCPRO50 digital compression
schemes applied to professional application versions of Panasonic’s
solid-state SD Memory Card technology. Critical benefits of the solid-state
memory design approach include: significant speed improvement in news
workflow; elimination of mechanical transports from ENG cameras (with
corresponding operating cost savings in lowered maintenance); outstanding
resistance to environmental stresses including shock, cold, dust and
humidity; significantly lighter weight and lower power consumption than
conventional ENG cameras; and widespread compatibility with IP-based
non-linear editing and network based distribution technologies. A pilot-lot
