1)      IFA: upsurge in international interest

IFA in Berlin will be opening its doors from 2nd to 7th September. For the organizers, gfu and Messe Berlin, the IFA-PreViews in Hamburg and Munich were a complete success. Some 500 journalists from all over Germany came in search of information about new products and trends at IFA 2005. Jens Heithecker, director of the Competence Centre at Messe Berlin and IFA Project Manager, was convinced that “the IFA PreViews 2005 reflects the curiosity in IFA and about the consumer electronics (CE) sector in general, and proves that this tradeshow is on the fast track to more success. Expansion of the rented display area has reached double figures, and increased interest around the world indicates that this year’s IFA will be bigger than ever.” The dynamic growth of the CE sector also takes the form of technological developments. “Visitors to the IFA 2005 – whether members of the public or from the trade – will be delighted with an enormous range of new items”, says Roland M. Stehle, gfu press spokesman. “From new mobile applications to attractive LCD and plasma screen technology, and high definition television HDTV, all the latest developments can be examined in detail in Berlin starting on 2nd September.” First innovations were presented at the IFA PreViews, including the world’s smallest PC at the heart of in-car entertainment system, LCD-TVs that can be individually configured regarding technology and styling, and the smallest projector in the world - not larger than a cigarette packet. HDTV is a major topic at the IFA Trend Talk entitled: “When will Germany finally get improved television?” Dr. Georg Kofler, Chairman of the Board of Premiere AG, emphasized at the forum: “HDTV will be the most important development for the next few years and will have a corresponding influence on the worldwide TV industrie. The IFA will be launching this new television age this September.” Intel also attracted a great deal of attention with its statement that IFA, for them, at this point is the most important tradeshows worldwide. Intel, accordingly, will showcase its largest presentation ever. Other companies participating at the IFA Previews were Blaupunkt, Casio Europe, Daewoo, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Grundig, Hitachi, Intel, LG Electronics, Loewe, NEC, Panasonic, Philips, Phocus Electronics, Pioneer, Sharp, Toshiba and Yakumo.

9)      sax3d.com GmbH: software for automatic projector controlling

The german sax3d.com gmbh, the manufacturer of the Holographic-Optical Projection Screen HOPS.®, has developed a software to switch on and off projectors automatically. The problem of using projectors in the area of advertising (POS / POI) is the limitation of the running time of the projectors (hours per day / days per week), to fulfil the guarantee conditions. By using the sax3d.com software a time-controlled switch on and switch off of one to four projectors is possible. By combination of the several projectors you can control if two projectors should run two times a day or one projector should run four times a day. This makes possible to let the projectors run all day without manual action and without breaking the guarantee conditions of the projector manufacturer.

11)  WolfVision: firmware updates for widescreen support

As a supplier of Visualizers offering Firmware Updates, WolfVision have become the first to offer Widescreen Support. All WolfVision models with 30 frames per second can now be upgraded by simply downloading the new firmware from www.wolfvision.com/support. In addition to the Visualizer's native 4:3 format, the following 16:9 and 16:10 Widescreen formats are supported: HD/HDTV 720p, HD/HDTV 1080p (both at 50 and 60 Hz), WXGA and SXGA+. No matter which display unit is used, with the addition of Widescreen Support WolfVision Visualizers are compatible with just everything on the market. Displaying a common 4:3 image from a Visualizer on a projector, plasma or monitor built for 16:9 or 16:10 widescreen can cause difficulties. Some units can not scale the image correctly. They either cut off important parts of the picture or stretch it in an ugly way (Making a golf ball look like an egg). Some units can scale the image correctly, but not in good quality. Scaling the picture to a Widescreen format at the image source, using the camera electronics, is the much better solution. The built-in high-end scaler of WolfVision Visualizers is perfectly suited for this. All of WolfVision's Progressive Scan Visualizers are equipped with a DVI output. Using a DVI-HDMI cable the units can connected to display devices built especially for HD/HDTV.

16)  cinemateq: The brand-new HDTV Switcher Kit

With the “HDTV Switcher Kit”, cinemateq comes up with a future-proof function extension for the picture optimizer plus II (SDI). 27)  Cabletime: New MediaStar installation at Open University

The new Library at The Open University’s main campus headquarters in Milton Keynes had an eye on the demands of future technology when it recently deployed a MediaStar TV distribution and video conferencing system from Cabletime. With CAT 6e cabling already installed in the Walton Hall HQ, The Open University was looking for a solution that could deliver TV, video, presentations, video conferencing, and radio across its network, and which could also offer the OU some degree of future-proofing as its requirements changed. The Open University Library specified the MediaStar Pro from Cabletime, which the company has designed to work on Cat5/6 structured cabling with the facility to run video, audio and IR code on a single cable. CTL AV has installed the system. As well as the TV distribution facility, the OU can also use MediaStar’s multipoint video conferencing facility, which enables up to six people to meet at any one time, and allows students and lecturers to make face-to-face contact with other Open University sites. The next stage for The Open University will be to add MediaStar Evolution, Cabletime’s latest addition to the MediaStar family. The company has designed the Evolution to take advantage of the developments in technology that allow efficient digital video delivery over IP based networks, and will broaden further the range of channels that the OU will be able to access. Cabletime, based in Newbury, Berkshire, is the designer and manufacturer of MediaStar, a unique and highly cost effective solution for every organization, which requires video media. MediaStar is a family of solutions, which delivers a smart way to distribute and manage video services throughout your building using existing cat5/cat6 data cabling and on/off-lan infrastructures.
