11) Samsung TFT-LCDs: new glass substrate of the 7th generation

Samsung Electronics these days announced the dimensions of the glass-substrate for the future production of the 7th generation TFT-LCD line. As the demand for LCD-TVs and large monitors is increasing, Samsung will use glass substrates that measure 1,870 mm x 2,200 mm to be able to reach high production efficiency. On the new production line Samsung will be manufacturing LCD displays with a diameter of 19” and 21” as well as large format panels with a diameter of 32” and 40” for the integration into LCD TVs. As standards and competition are always getting harder, Samsung wants to create a future standard in the market and have an advantage by introducing the 7th generation substrates. The production line of the 7th generation makes it possible to produce twelve 32” displays or eight 40” displays on only one substrate. That makes this production line 1.5 up to 2 times more efficient than the production line of the 6th generation. Important for this is the fact that the market for large displays will grow in 2003. The digital broadcast of TV programs will start in 2005, what will also influence the growth of the market.

The result: no visible lines and a flicker-free image – and because of that everyone can see an image with a better detail reproduction and color quality. The UP-1280HD is equipped with the latest technologies for image processing: digital noise reduction, adaptive static detect deinterlacing, reduction of the motion COMP & DV color shift, adaptive 3D comb filter, pixel based motion identification and a resolution of up to 1280 x 1024 (SXGA) resp. 720p/1080i. Therefore the UP-1280HD reaches a functionality that cannot be found even in similar much more expensive devices of this kind. The UP-1280HD is available from now on. 21) beamer meeting III, TAG Mc Laren – room acoustics

On May, 3rd and 4th, the third beamer meeting was held at the Holiday Inn in Duesseldorf/Kaarst. In a cooperation with the company TAG Mc Laren, Big Screen hosted a workshop with the title “Prick your ears”. Right beside the “Shoot-out” room was the cinema 1 of the company “Big Screen”. Mr. Dominik Spode of  “TAG Mc Laren” gave a lecture on the subject „room acoustics“ – a subject that is underestimated very often. During his lecture he also said that companies or single persons very often pay a lot of money for extremely expensive cables and only get a minimal audible improvement  in the end. Instead of that one should deal with the acoustical originalities of the room – of course, together with the help of a specialist. Every loudspeaker is levelled and adjusted in a so called anechoic room but at home nobody possesses such a kind of room. The audible sound is composed of the direct sound of the loudspeaker and the reflections at walls, ceilings und the furniture of the room. With the help of the AV-pre-amplifier AV 192R of Tag Mc Laren and its TMREQ (TAG Mc Laren Room equalisation) system, the differences are corrected digitally.

24) Steiner: Vienna festival weeks – with amazing video staging

Station „Europe“ was the motto of this year’s opening of the Vienna festival weeks on the city hall place. A big panorama projection of 286 square metres provides for unbeatable video pleasure. Six separate projection areas – controlled via a multimedia-controlling – formed the more than 50 metres broad overall picture. Numerous high-class projectors provided  brilliant images. Additionally, live signals of ORF (Austrian TV-broadcaster)-cameras were integrated in the production. The sophisticated surround-sound design as well as the light effects on the stage were coordinated centrally via the controlling software. A further technical highlight was a “transparent” LED-wall: the video wall of 83 square miles was able to change its transparence via a special control system. The Vienna synphonical Orchestra under the conductor Johnny Bertl was placed behind the wall and because of the transparent effect it was set dramatically in scene. Sometimes the orchestra was visible, then over dimensional scripts and images “float” in front of the orchestra.
