22)  RGB Spectrum: Programmable GPI/Contact Closure Serial Interface

Many sensors and systems indicate a change of state or alert via a contact closure. A simple contact closure must be translated into a command that directs a computer or other device to perform a specific function. A display processor like the SuperView® or MediaWall®, for example, can be directed to perform tasks by sending it the appropriate command string over the serial port. The GPI/Contact Closure Interface is a solution for translating contact closures into serial commands. The Model RGB 16-FP is a programmable RS-232 serial device designed to control any device with serial port. Commands can be any ASCII (or non-ASCII) data with programmable delays embedded in the string. The commands can also be complex, multi-part strings up to 250 characters. A powerful Windows® based application (available on-line) is used to create a data file and upload it to the RGB 16-FP via a supplied cable. The unit is supplied with a regulated 5v DC power adapter and a serial cable. The inputs are on screw terminals with headers that can be unplugged for easy installation. The RGB 16-FP has 16 discrete inputs that senses a DC voltage level or contact closure. It detects both "low-to-high" and "high-to-low" transitions. A "Start-up String", if desired, is available to send an initial power-up command string (including a programmable delay) to the target device at the time of power-up.

25)  ict: Event Technology for real Visions

At their trade show booth at the Prolight+Sound in Frankfurt, ict Innovative Communication Technologies AG, Kohlberg presented how media elements can be used for implementation of communication visions and above all, which fantastic innovations are currently available on the market. An impressive 21 meter long LED band consisting of individual LED strands suspended from the ceiling in the hall was only one of the many media technology attractions which ict presented at the show. Together with their partner tennagels Medientechnik, ict AG realized a large format curveLED Curtain. The individual LED strands (6 mm SMD LEDs with 2,020 cd per pixel) were mounted above the ict booth using an ingenious mounting system and the strands continued as a multi-media band to the tennagels booth. With a diameter of 16 mm, the strands can be up to 7.7 meters high. The pixel pitch between the individual LED units is 40 mm. Due to a connector system, the LED pixels can be adapted so that free shape formation is also possible in the horizontal axis. Even double sided mounting of the curveLED Curtain can be realized without any problem. Because of the cascadable mounting system, the curveLED Curtain can be mounted either hanging or standing in a very short time. The auto-stereoscopic Philips 3D-LCD screen was a real eye-catcher at the trade show: The Philips 42-3D6W01 WOW can display vivid three dimensional images in the highest quality and viewers can enjoy the effect without the need for special glasses. The high resolution 42“ LC display (1,920 x 1,080 pixel) can also be operated in 2D model. The new 103” Panasonic Plasma Display caused no less of a sensation at the show. A “feel-good atmosphere” was created in the ict Lounge where visitors were invited to linger. A Stumpfl Wings Platinum 3 application – the ideal tool for creative multi-media productions – rounded off the ict product presentation at the Prolight+Sound. The modular production and presentation software ideally facilitates extraordinary show productions through the integration of numerous media of various types.

To satisfy the high demands of its rental partners, CL video rental GmbH & Co. KG has now taken a total of 60 new high-end screens into its programme. This includes 42, 50 and 65 inch plasma displays from Panasonic (TH-42PH9, TH-50PF9 and TH-65PF9), along with 40 and 46 inch TFTs from NEC (NEC Multeos M40 and M46). Apart from the 42-incher from Panasonic, all the screens are full HD-enabled. “That is clearly where the future lies”, Jörg Heinze, director of CL is sure. “Demand for the digital picture standard has risen enormously and as a rental company we are always trying to offer our customers the best solutions.” Apart from the picture quality the optical appearance of the devices plays a not insignificant role. “With their elegant design the NEC-TFTs are particularly suited to high-level appearances”, according to Jörg Heinze. The Multeos screens are edged with aluminium strips. “That makes them look good even when they are set up.” As a rental company for high-end presentation technology CL video rental GmbH & Co. KG makes the latest equipment available to its customers. So it is no wonder that their catalogue has to be constantly updated to match the changes. The latest edition of this reference book for AV professionals will be coming out in the next few days.

28)  G+B: Prolight + Sound – a multimedia festival for the senses

The media service company Gahrens + Battermann presented the technical highlights from their rental park on a modern stand with a lounge ambience. Via the creative use of media technology, visitors to the exhibition were be carried off to a multimedia oasis of the senses: On a 3mm indoor LED video display from Hibino integrated into the back wall, they were able to enter a world of waterfalls and humming birds. This animation, which was perfectly suited to the medium, was a surprise for many visitors who were often amazed about the mobile elements – proof for the unbeatable picture quality of the high quality-Hibino module. Synchronous with the video animation-controlled changing light colours, created by the Thomas Pixelline 110 LED spotlights, the positive impulses for the visitors were intensified. The Barco Olite 510 module, which was sunk into the floor, provided a further eye-catcher. Integrated in the stand concept using glass floor plates which visitors can walk over they created a multimedia lake in which animated fish were swimming. The complete scene in the stand concept was rounded off by jungle noises and the sounds of bird calls. All in all the media house’s exhibition stand made a powerful impression on the visitors with its creative design and the harmoniously matched interplay of the various technological components.

37)  Gefen helps create Virtual Reality in University of Applied Sciences

The University of Applied Sciences at Furtwangen, Germany recently initiated its decision to create a virtual reality laboratory in which Media Lab students could create real-world strategies in a three dimensional environment. Innovative for its use of current technology to create an engaging virtual reality, the laboratory offers a training and experimental environment in which all possible facets of a project may be explored before students proceed with the best solution. Implemented by SDI GmbH in Munich, the lab uses strategically placed high definition video projection supplemented by wave field synthesis loudspeakers located around the circumference of the lab. Connectivity equipment supplied by Gefen ensured the delivery of high definition visuals with no latency period. "The technical basis for the visual distribution is the use of six projectors located in a hinged installation, each beaming high definition images on a massive rear projection screen," explained Thorsten Goecke, SDI product manager. "By polarizing the various projections, the presentation appears absolutely three-dimensional as life-size imagery flashes across the screen." To distribute the data required for high definition video, SDI relied on an assortment of Gefen HDTV extenders and splitters to deliver simultaneous imagery throughout the lab. Gefen's fiber optics cabling was installed to ensure an unadulterated distribution of all video signals. To compliment the video, SDI installed loudspeakers in circumferential alignment, conveying an auditory authenticity for research and teaching at the highest level.
