1)      KIOSK EUROPE EXPO and DIGITAL SIGNAGE EXPO 2008

After the success of KIOSK EUROPE EXPO 2007 last year, the international trade fair for self-service kiosks, technologies and solutions for all industries is again being held in Essen this year. In cooperation with POPAI, hf media & events is also organising DIGITAL SIGNAGE EXPO 2008 that will run in parallel; this is dedicated to in-store TV, digital media, ad screens and content-management solutions. This year, visitors can look forward to a new concept that will showcase both self-service solutions and those for digital customer communication. At a joint fair, trade visitors can find solutions for a diverse range of industries, including retail, financial services, tourism and entertainment, as well as for the public sector, and can thus benefit from the experience of all industries. “We are confident that we’ll be able to build on last year’s success and impress both visitors and exhibitors alike with our new, exciting concept. For the first time, the world’s largest self-service trade event and Europe’s largest fair for digital signage will be held under one roof”, says Jens Schindler, MD of the event organiser. Messe Essen will open the doors to halls 1 and 2 (entrance via the Messehaus Sued) for the two exhibitions and associated workshops from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on 6 to 8 May 2008.

3)      ISE changes RAI hall layout for 2009 event

After detailed consultation with exhibitors and with Amsterdam’s RAI convention centre, the organisers of Integrated Systems Europe are to remodel next year’s show. The move follows unprecedented demand for stand space, which even an extension to the 2008 layout could not have met. “Quite simply, we had no alternative but to change our layout,” comments Mike Blackman, Managing Director, Integrated Systems Events. “Even by taking the whole of Hall 7 at the back of the RAI, we would have sold out of space within a matter of weeks. With another 10 months to go before our 2009 event, we have acted quickly to ensure that all our exhibitors have plenty of opportunity to familiarise themselves with the new layout, and can prepare for it accordingly.” The new layout sees ISE abandoning the rearmost Halls 6 and 7 of the RAI. Instead, the show will occupy Halls 9, 10 and 11, which are at the front of the convention centre, close to the train station. These will be connected to the existing Halls 1-5 by the new Expo Foyer, a centrepiece walkway that is scheduled for completion later this year. In addition, the two ‘wings’ of the show will be further connected by conference and seminar rooms – bringing the additional benefit of a more integrated education and exhibition space. “

4)      projectiondesign commences shipping WUXGA projectors

Just two months since they made their worldwide debut at the Integrated Systems Europe show in Amsterdam, the first WUXGA resolution DLP projectors are now being shipped by Norwegian manufacturer projectiondesign. The F10 wuxga and F30 wuxga projectors are capable of producing images at a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 pixels in a 16:10 aspect ratio, a 56% increase over SXGA+, which has been projectiondesign's most popular resolution until now.  WUXGA is a popular resolution for desktop monitors and notebook computers and is widely accepted as the resolution of choice in many industries. It is also backwards-compatible with UXGA at 1,600 x 1,200, making it ideal for upgrading legacy 4:3 aspect ratio systems to widescreen. The main difference between the two models is brightness and configurability. While the F10 wuxga offers up to 3,100 ANSI lumens, the F30 wuxga offers 4,300, with more and higher brightness models coming soon. While both models offer a selection of lenses - the F10 wuxga is available with both a wide angle and a zoom lens - the F30 offers a wide range of lenses covering 0.79 to 6.5:1 throw ratios. Additionally, the F30 wuxga features the projectiondesign patented DuArch illumination system for failsafe operation.

19)  RGB: Using a videowall to control an underwater ROV

Most people think of a videowall as an array of projectors displaying imagery in large venues, often public spaces serving multiple viewers. Today, video wall processors are also finding use as multi-monitor display systems serving a single operator. Perhaps one of the most extraordinary instances of this is the control of undersea remotely piloted vehicles or ROVs. Here the objective is the delivery of critical information to a single decision-maker, the ROV operator or a small team of operators. Hence the displays are likely to be flat panel monitors rather than projectors and the total display space measured in a few square feet rather than the dozens or hundreds of square feet of traditional video walls. The monitor array may be considered to comprise the "display real estate" available to the operator. Even where individual images never span more than a single monitor, the advantage of a display wall processor is that it offers unified control far more efficiently than if the task were relegated to separate processors feeding individual monitors. Underwater vehicles are used for a variety of missions, including the laying of cable and pipelines.
