Bildungsmesse, Nuremberg – the whole world of education

The Bildungsmesse - the world’s largest trade fair for education- took place from March 31st until April 4th 2003 in Nuremberg. 688 exhibitors (+ 13%) presented new products and provided services of the educational branch in seven halls on 22.500 m². About 70.000 visitors were expected to come but only 50.000 came. The audio-visual products were presented almost exclusively in hall 8. The forum Multimedia, also in hall 8 offered a complete info-package with 35 single events concerning “computer technology in class”. At this forum, educational concepts and precise multimedia-applications for class were presented beside the presentation of special papers of very well-known educationalists.

VdS: One year after PISA – costs for teaching aids are again at the lowest level

In 2002, the costs for education of the public authorities unfortunately remained static with approx. 270 Mio. Euro – the lowest level than ever. According to the association VdS, the costs for a single pupil have been reduced continuously since 1991 (-37%) and account for only 21, 60 Euro/pupil (1991: 34, 50 Euro). Despite other political comments, the growth prospects regarding the multimedia-based teaching-aids are not very positive. After this market segment did not grow already in 2001, the association VdS recorded even a slump in sales in 2002.

„didacta - die Bildungsmesse“ –  9.-13.2.2004 in Cologne

In 2004, the “Bildungsmesse” will take place in Cologne again but will then be presented with its new title “didacta – die Bildungsmesse”. The decision for Cologne was made because this region is one of the most populous regions of the European Union. Moreover, the Cologne trade fair has already successfully organised the Bildungsmesse in 2002 (856 exhibitors from ten countries participated and approximately 90.000 people visited the fair).

10) DViT technology by SMART - break-through and award-winning

Just one month after the announcement, the new DViT (Digital Vision Touch) technology by SMART Technologies Inc. is already award-winning. First the 2003 NSCA Innovations in Technology-Video-Award, presented for the Rear Projection SMART Board 3000i interactive whiteboard with DViT technology at NSCA 2003 in Dallas, TX and second the 2003 GCN Best New Technology Award for Display Devices, presented by Government Computer News for the Rear Projection SMART Board 3000i interactive whiteboard with DViT technology at FOSE 2003 in Washington, DC. The DViT technology uses especially developed digital cameras and elaborate software to be able to detect the touch of a finger, a pen or any other object on the display. The cameras are positioned in the corners of the display and send a position specification to a signal processor which calculates the exact position of the contact. On the display itself no further materials are applied so that the picture keeps its good quality and can be represented in brighter and higher contrast.

11) NEC WT600 –world record projector- from 5,5cm distance to more than 1m picture diagonal!

The new mirror projector WT600 by NEC offers large pictures in spite of smallest distances to the wall. To reach this aim NEC developed an aspheric mirror which prevents the usual distortions. At a projection distance of 5,5 to 65,0 cm the projector reaches picture diagonals of 1,02 to up to 2,54 m. Thus large pictures can be generated in small rooms without any problems. The WT600 offers a XGA resolution at 1200 ANSI lumens. The high contrast ratio of 2500:1 is reached by the newest generation of TI’s DLP Technology Chip with DDR technology. This technology enables the miniature mirrors on the chip to move faster than the ones on conventional DLP chips so that a better picture quality can be guaranteed.

With the included remote control various functions can be used (scroll, zoom, turning the picture…). The PR-210X was shown at the trade fair for education by the Canon trade partner PDS GmbH.

The projectors are equipped with all usual computer connections like DVI-I (digital/analogue) and D-Sub15 (Computer in / monitor out). If a control monitor is connected to the monitor output the lecturer can keep an eye on the contents of the presentation while presenting without having to turn to the screen. 25) CeBIT 2003 – Final Report

The CeBIT 2003 was more successful than many had expected – nevertheless: With a visitors’ decline of about 17 %, CeBIT suffered a setback. Around 560,000 visitors (preceding year 674,000), of which 21,5 % came from abroad (preceding year 20,4 %), attended the CeBIT this year. In the previous year there had been a purchase caution, this year on the other hand customers showed a certain backlog demand. In comparison to the preceding year 6,526 (2002: 7,264) CeBIT exhibitors were able to register a raise of orders of about 10 %. More than 43 % visitors attended the fair having in mind actual intentions of investment. Visitors were higher qualified and better informed and thus demanded a high quality consulting. 21,5 % of all visitors were from abroad. Especially numbers of visitors from Eastern European countries had grown compared to the year before. Around 18,500 visitors (16,100), that is 15,3 % of all foreign visitors (11,7), came from that region. The next CeBIT will last 7 days and will take place from Thursday 18 March to Wednesday 24 March 2004.
