At
the CeBIT, Toshiba Professional Visual Products (PVP) introduced a new
projector in the performance class: the Toshiba T90. It has been
specially developed for use in business and thanks to its DLP
technology, XGA resolution (1024 x 768 pixels) and 2000:1 contrast
with an extra sharp picture, it really stands out. A light output of
2000 ANSI lumens ensures the best picture quality even in poor light
conditions. With it various connection options, the T90 offers maximum
flexibility. The "Active Loop Mode" is new, an active
monitor output on the projector. The T90´s individual functions can
be easily operated with the remote control. The device will be
available from distributors and specialist stores from June 2004 and
the recommended price is 2,590.- euros (plus VAT).

For the first time Olympus is now
also offering projectors. The Olympus VP-1 is small, not much bigger
than a digital camera, light (only 1.1 k) and as a result is very
portable. It has an XGA resolution of 1024 x 768. This mini monster
comes with 1,000 ANSI lumens of brightness and a contrast of 2000:1.
In addition it uses Olympus lens technology and the Double Data Rate
(DDR) from Texas Instruments. The Olympus VP-1 projector was
introduced in the USA at the Consumer Electronics Show in January in
Las Vegas, along with the P-10 compact printer. Both devices are part
of the imaging solution that Olympus offers to its digital camera
users.

With the V3-131 the firm PLUS has
once again set new standards for the size of digital projectors: with
a height of just 35 mm, and a weight of just 1.1 k, the V3-131 is the
slimmest digital XGA projector in the world and just like the mobile
phone and the PDA will belong to the mobile presenter´s most useful
personal accessories. Despite its size the device is fitted with all
the technical fine points. With 1000 ANSI lumens and a contrast ratio
of 2.000:1 the device has a superb output which is especially
noticeable with photos or video images. The integrated wide-angle lens
guarantees a large picture even at short distances. You can control
the length of your presentations with the presentation timer. And the
password protection also guards against unauthorised use.

In March BenQ reduced its projector
prices. It affects nearly all the devices from projectors for
beginners to professional data-video projectors. Ten models have gone
down by up to 20 percent compared with February. The reason: BenQ has
upped its production capacity in the factories in Taiwan and China
from 15,000 in 2003 to up to 35,000 this year. That enables the
manufacturer to pass on the savings to its customers. Here are a
couple of examples. The DLP projector BenQ PB8220 with a hefty 2200
ANSI lumens and a 2000:1 contrast now has the recommended retail price
of 1,999 euros incl. VAT (approx. 20 % reduction). The BenQ PB7220,
the one with a basic resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, a 2000:1
contrast and an ECO mode, now costs 2,249 euros (rrp. incl. VAT) and
is also about 20 percent cheaper. The BenQ PB6200 now costs about 15
percent less (rrp. 1,699 Euros incl. VAT). Seven further models have
had their prices reduced.

home cinemas, as the current wide-screen format 16:9 is available here
without the customary frame. It has a high, cinema standard 900:1
contrast and 900 ANSI lumens brightness. The low noise level operation
of 31 bD can be reduced even more with the "whisper" mode
and goes right down to 27 dB. For straightening the picture it has of
course a Keystone corrector and a 1.2x optical zoom and four-power
digital enlargement. The Solid Cinema should be available in the shops
from June 2004 for a recommended retail price of 1,499.- euros (incl.

Projectiondesign presents its new
16:9 projector model "zero one" and "zero five" at
the CeBIT. Both projectors have been optimised for high quality home
cinema demands and are based on Texas Instruments´ DLP technology.
While the "zero five", with a resolution of 1024 x 576,
treats you to a continuously variable brightness of 500-900 ANSI
lumens (lamp life < 3000 hours) and a contrast of 2300:1, its big
brother "zero one" outdoes even this with a resolution of
1280 x 720 at 600-1200 ANSI lumens (lamp life < 4000 hours) and a
3000:1 contrast ratio. To improve the picture signal both projectors
use the DCDi picture technology from Faroudja, are DVI-D compatible
and with only 28 dB also extremely quiet. The distributor for Germany
is the firm WS-Spalluto.

The Hitachi Digital Media Group
allowed journalists at the CeBIT a first look at the extended home
cinema projector series. Hatachi presented for the first time an
absolutely red-hot item - the brand new PJ-LC5 which belongs in the
lower price segment. The PJ-LC5 is exceptionally good value for money:
with three 0.55 inch LCD panels it achieves a light output of 1200
ANSI lumens, at an operating noise level of a mere 28dB (in whisper
mode). Hitachi´s Motion Adaptive Progressive Scan technology
guarantees the quality and non-flickering image of a more expensive
model. Flexible connection and installation options mean you can set
it to suit your individual needs exactly. This makes the PJ-LC5 ideal
for game consoles, digital receivers, surfing in the Internet or just
for total enjoyment of the latest cinema hits. The PJ-LC5 will be

The CeBIT upturn has begun. Never
before - not even during the ICT boom years - have companies attending
CeBIT to make their final purchasing decisions shown as much
willingness to invest as in the year 2004. Almost 50 percent of trade
visitors at CeBIT 2004 came with actual purchase plans, and firms
across all sectors made it abundantly clear that they are ready to
make an active contribution to triggering an economic upturn. With
attendance totaling 510,000, CeBIT 2004 has exceeded all expectations,
with an average of 3,400 more visitors per day compared with last year
- the first such rise in three years. The majority of the 6,411 CeBIT
exhibitors indicated far greater certainty this year that their sales
talks would culminate in real contracts. At the end of the show some
57 percent of exhibitors viewed the economic outlook for their sector
as "favorable" to "very favorable" - or a good six
percent more than at the start of the event. Thomas Fahrner, Area
Sales Director of Hitachi Digital Media Group has expressed his
satisfaction with this year´s CeBIT: "We could note a clear

Philips-Development: E-Ink - Displays
to be Coiled Up
Extra thin flat screens, entirely
made of plastic, similar to paper, made to be coiled up and put into
the pocket - that is the new display generation, a development that
has been shaped by Philips. The technology is based on polymeres,
hence synthetic. This is what makes the displays bendable, extremely
light and practically unbreakable. Philips has the key competence when
it comes to the manufacturing of rugged TFTs on polymere-basis with
almost identical electrical characteristics. Philips, together with
the American company E-Ink, has already introduced a fully functional
prototype - three tenth millimeters thin and rollable like paper. The
displays consist of a 200 micrometer thick upper side (1 micrometer =
1/1000 mm). The basis layer consists of integrated pixel-control in
form of electronic components made of synthetic, the front contains
electronic ink which reacts towards electricity. The high resolution
displays deliver images and writings in stunning sharpness. The
displays can be coiled up into small formatted housings. The portable
devices can run with small batteries which have a positive effect on
price, weight and handling.
