Dear Newsletter Readers,

To the Table of Contents

In this edition of http://www.AVP-Newsletter.com we have the latest news about data and video projection / presentation, the video conference market and LED large screen systems. This time we are also paying particular attention to the highlights which were presented at the CeBIT and the latest articles which are being shown at ProLight + Sound from March 31 - April 3, 2004.

1)     ProLight+Sound: New Media Technology Spread Over 500 m2

From March 31st to April 3 the ProLight + Sound, the exhibition for technical events, took place in Frankfurt. With 650 exhibiters from around 30 countries and 26.735 visitors (+30%) the ProLight + Sound is the world’s largest specialist trade fair for event and communication technology, AV production and entertainment.

For the first time ProLight + Sound makes space for a new growth segment in the branch: over a space of about 500 square metres, about 20 exhibitors (incl. Audio Video Lilienthal, BARCO, Comm-Tec, Crestron, DNP, Frauenhofer, ICT, Ingenieurbüro f. Beschallungstechnik, Objektform, PA Elektronik, Publitec, Screen-NT and SHARP) presented all kinds of media technology products and know-how. There were some exhibitors working in the media technology field represented at the exhibition last year too. What’s new is having them all together in one place in hall 8.

With the presentation in the exhibition area the subject was now being highlighted from all sides. Among the industry solutions on show the visitor could found conference room solutions with high-resolution data and video projectors for permanent installation and for mobile uses, display and projection systems for special and all-round projection, info-screen towers with TV picture-compatible systems and screen sizes of up to 150 inches, high-resolution LED wall screens for indoor use and media control systems for professional work in presentation technology.

Another good extension to the subject was created by the cooperation with the CAVIS Congress for audio-visual installation systems and the Media Worknet: CAVIS presented media technology as a main focus in the congress programme - it was an integral part of the Media Worknet which started successfully last year. Trade visitors to ProLight + Sound got all the lectures free of charge.

2)     NEC: Mini-Projector LT170 Wins "Design Oscar"

The portable projector LT170 from NEC has won an iF Gold Award in the category "Product Design". There were 400 entries for this category altogether. The “grip-it-and-go“ operation concept was expressly mentioned. The jury also praised the design by Ricca Tiztezuchi, Naoto Fukasawa Design. It comes especially to the fore when the projector lens is hidden behind the projection guard. " With the cuboid design of the LT 170 we have taken a completely new direction in the projector market. We are delighted that our design has been so well received ", Thomas Nedder, General Manager for Professional Graphics, said about the award. The LT170 measures only 12 by 28 cm, is 8.5 cm high and can easily be held in one hand.

3)     Kindermann: KXD1000 - The All-in-One Projector

Kindermann, the specialist for business and home projection, presented a world premiere at the CeBIT - the KXD 100. The projector also boasts a wireless 2.1-canal loudspeaker system and a TV tuner as an option. With its 1300 ANSI lumens, XGA resolution and a contrast of 2000:1 this video-data projector provides the exceptional picture quality which we have come to expect from DLP projectors and a colour intensity which the double RGB colour wheel without white segment makes possible. Together with the 1:1.2 Carl Zeiss zoom lens it always gives you a perfect picture. The KXD 1000 weighs a mere 4.5 kg (incl. DVD player) and with 30 dB is very quiet. The all-in-one projector will be available from May.

4)     The InFocus LP70+ is Here!

The LP70+, which is now available, follows in the footsteps of the dependable mobile bestseller LP70. The most important improvement over its predecessor is the increased brightness which now has 1,400 ANSI lumens as opposed to 1,100 before. The XGA projector is also HDTV compatible. This enormous increase in performance has not affected the price; the recommended retail price of EUR 1,999 plus VAT stays the same. Its compact construction means that this light (only 1.1k), robust LP70+ is perfect for use outside and in meeting rooms. The DLP projector has an enormous 1,100:1 contrast ratio and is pleasantly quiet. The LP70+ can be adapted for wireless LAN – with the extremely easy to operate module LiteShow.

9)     BenQ Puts Projector Prices Down

In March BenQ reduced its projector prices. It affects nearly all the devices from projectors for beginners to professional data-video projectors. Ten models have gone down by up to 20 percent compared with February. The reason: BenQ has upped its production capacity in the factories in Taiwan and China from 15,000 in 2003 to up to 35,000 this year. That enables the manufacturer to pass on the savings to its customers. Here are a couple of examples. The DLP projector BenQ PB8220 with a hefty 2200 ANSI lumens and a 2000:1 contrast now has the recommended retail price of 1,999 euros incl. VAT (approx. 20 % reduction). The BenQ PB7220, the one with a basic resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, a 2000:1 contrast and an ECO mode, now costs 2,249 euros (rrp. incl. VAT) and is also about 20 percent cheaper. The BenQ PB6200 now costs about 15 percent less (rrp. 1,699 Euros incl. VAT). Seven further models have had their prices reduced.

12)projectiondesign: Zero one/five - High-end Home Cinema

Projectiondesign presents its new 16:9 projector model "zero one" and "zero five" at the CeBIT. Both projectors have been optimised for high quality home cinema demands and are based on Texas Instruments´ DLP technology. While the "zero five", with a resolution of 1024 x 576, treats you to a continuously variable brightness of 500-900 ANSI lumens (lamp life < 3000 hours) and a contrast of 2300:1, its big brother "zero one" outdoes even this with a resolution of 1280 x 720 at 600-1200 ANSI lumens (lamp life < 4000 hours) and a 3000:1 contrast ratio. To improve the picture signal both projectors use the DCDi picture technology from Faroudja, are DVI-D compatible and with only 28 dB also extremely quiet. -   Philips-Development: E-Ink - Displays to be Coiled Up

Extra thin flat screens, entirely made of plastic, similar to paper, made to be coiled up and put into the pocket - that is the new display generation, a development that has been shaped by Philips. The technology is based on polymeres, hence synthetic. This is what makes the displays bendable, extremely light and practically unbreakable. Philips has the key competence when it comes to the manufacturing of rugged TFTs on polymere-basis with almost identical electrical characteristics. Philips, together with the American company E-Ink, has already introduced a fully functional prototype - three tenth millimeters thin and rollable like paper. The displays consist of a 200 micrometer thick upper side (1 micrometer = 1/1000 mm). The basis layer consists of integrated pixel-control in form of electronic components made of synthetic, the front contains electronic ink which reacts towards electricity. The high resolution displays deliver images and writings in stunning sharpness. The displays can be coiled up into small formatted housings. The portable devices can run with small batteries which have a positive effect on price, weight and handling.
