Dear newsletter readers!

This issue of www.AVP-Newsletter.com presents you with latest news from the data- and video projection / presentation.

1)      CeBIT 2006: From March 9th to 15th in Hanover, Germany

The CeBIT success story continues unabated. This unique showcase will cover the entire digital universe at a single location - in Hanover, Germany, from March 9th to 15th, 2006. But CeBIT is much more than just a shop window for new products. Knowledge transfer and networking also play an increasingly important role. With around 30 special presentations and 800 individual lectures, CeBIT is a leading platform for know-how transfer and community building. Furthermore, an international appeal is evident on the exhibitor side. Organizers Deutsche Messe AG is expecting nearly 6,300 exhibitors from some 70 countries. Something like 3,300 of these firms have registered direct from abroad. Their numbers are swelled by the many international concerns which will be represented at the show by their German branch companies. The main growth area for exhibitor registrations is in Asia, with China, Hong Kong and South Korea all represented much more strongly in 2006. The upcoming CeBIT is expected to attract over 1,700 exhibitors from the Asian-Pacific region. It is also gratifying to note the continuing interest from firms in the growth regions of Eastern and Central Europe. With over 200 exhibiting firms in 2006 the level of participation remains virtually unchanged.

2)      ISCO: Dome projection was the eye-catcher

The 120 degree fisheye dome projection lens was definitely the eye-catcher at the ISCO booth at ISE in Brussels and inspired the imagination of the visitors. As an example for stunning projections into a hemisphere of various sizes ISCO showed images from the underwater world with the 120 degree lens in a rear projection installation. The amazingly high quality image of the projection into a half dome grabbed the attention of the visitors. Furthermore the streamlined range of LCD projection lenses, tele & wide angle attachments for LCD/DLP or LCOS or D-ILA projectors and the wide range of anamorphic lenses for various applications were demonstrated to the interested visitors. The new anamorphic attachment with the factor 1,77 launched on ISE is going to be available in the first quarter of 2006. 3)      projectiondesign: Successful at the ISE

projectiondesign can look back on a successful trade show appearance at this year’s ISE. The newcomers (founded in 2002) could not be overlooked since their new booth design and a larger exhibiting space attracted the visitors’ attention. The first single chip DLP projector featuring a 1080 chip by Texas Instruments was the highlight on the booth. In the business class, the Norwegian firm has enhanced their broad portfolio by another top product, the evo2sx+. The cooperation with renown companies operating in the 3D business such as CYVIZ proves the path that company founder Jörn Ericsson has chosen to go is right, namely above all manufacturing high-quality and high-resolution projectors.

5)      Toshiba PDT: Two New Super Close Projection Models

Toshiba Projection & Display Technology (PDT) presents two new „Super Close Projection“ models: the ET10 and the ET20. Entirely new developed, these devices are very suitable for short projection distances due to an integrated wide angle lens. At a distance of just half a meter the projector projects a picture size of 1.30 m. Thanks to special technology the devices deliver pin sharp, crystal clear images even in small rooms. A resolution of 854 x 480 pixels and a high contrast ratio of 2000:1 guarantee high quality and rich-in-detail 16:9 movie experiences. An extraordinary housing design – realized by industrial designer firm Pininfarina – already suggests the innovative concept. These short-distance projectors are also ideal to be used with game consoles. The visual experience is complemented by excellent audio quality realized by the appending Dolby Pro Logic 5.1 surround sound systems. The ET20 is additionally equipped with an integrated DVD player. Both home cinema projectors based on Toshiba’s proprietary SCP technology (Super Close Projection) can already be used at a projection distance as close as 0.20 m. At this minimum distance, the picture diagonal is 0.65 m. At a maximum distance of 1.60 m, the picture is enlarged to 2.90 m. With these two SCP projectors, Toshiba realized a space saving concept that is also suitable for presentations in retail. 12)  SANYO: PLV-HD2000 Featuring Native 2K Resolution

The SANYO PLV-HD10 projector has already found its way into many movie theatres presenting digital commercial films. Its successor, the PLV-HD2000, however, promises yet another boost for SANYO. Featuring a resolution of 2,048 x 1,080 pixels, this projector realizes brilliant images of up to 25 metres on the screen. A contrast ratio of 1000:1 allows for impressive colour saturation and remarkable details even in darker scenes. In combination with brightness of 7,000 ANSI lumens, watching a movie becomes a visual experience. The reason for such a remarkable brightness is the micro lens technology: In front of each of the three 1.65“ panels of the PLV-HD2000 are micro lenses that bundle the light and navigate it exactly through the pixels. However, brilliant images are also generated by a 12-Bit colour processing which is able to represent a total of 1.07 billion colours. Thanks to an enormous colour tone variety, images can be realized with great detail and exact nuances. A multi lamp system consisting of 4 x 300 W UHP further boosts the movie experience. In case one of the four lamps fails, the system automatically switches to the working lamps and the screening can continue. As a latest new feature, there are eleven lenses available, from extreme wide-angle to extreme zoom lens.

33)  Kramer: Long Distance DVI – Signals up to 164 Feet

Celebrating their 25th Anniversary in 2006, Kramer Electronics, Ltd., a worldwide supplier of audio, video and computer graphics signal distribution, switching and processing equipment, has introduced four optical DVI cables, the models 6010, 6020, 6030, and 6050, capable of sending DVI signals from 33 feet up to 164 feet without the need for repeaters. XGA resolution DVI signals typically can travel about 25 to 30 feet over copper based cables before the signal is lost. Kramer’s new fiber-optic cables have converters built in each DVI-D connector on both ends of the cable. These converters turn the signals into fiber-optic light pulses so that the signals can travel much greater distances. Kramer’s new fiber-optic DVI-D cables come in four pre-cut lengths. The 6010 is 10 m (32.8 ft), the 6020 is 20 m (65.6 ft), the 6030 is 30 m (98.4 ft), and the 6050 is 50 m (164 ft). The new fiber-optic DVI-D cables comply with the DVI standard and support the DDC2B mode. They are very flexible and do not require external power, making them very “installer friendly”. They draw their +5V power on pin 14 from most source devices (some DVI source devices may not supply power on pin 14 and will require an external power adapter). These cables support computer graphics video-signals with resolutions of up to 1920 x 1200 at 60 Hz, and HDTV signals up to 1080p. It can be used with any DVI compatible display. All four models of this optical DVI cable are now in stock and available through Kramer Electronics sales companies worldwide. The Kramer Electronics, Ltd. with its world headquarters in Jerusalem/Israel, was founded in 1981 and is an ISO 9001:2000 certified company.

36)  Stumpfl: 23 m Panorama Show for Swiss Television

Eagerly awaited, the new SF Swiss Television news studio went on air recently. More consistent and subtle, this is how the appearance of the new broadcasting station can be described. Be it video imports or studio sequences: in the future the images in the news programmes will increasingly be supplied by moving cameras. The new technology was implemented on a decorative panorama screen of 23 m by 1.5 m by Softedge Production. Due to the various camera movements, the projected area required an extra 20 % in terms of image size, to avoid black areas at the sides. The screen is used every day for the programmes Tagesschau, 10vor10 and Meteo. Over a length of 23 m, 10 Barco projectors project animations and images (front projection) at a resolution of 10850 x 1050 pixels using Wings Platinum panorama technology. Thanks to the Warp Function of Wings Platinum every projector could be optimally aligned with the curve of the projection screen. The Warp function in Wings Platinum allows the complete screen contents or individual multi-display areas to be warped until the pictures projected onto curved or warped areas turn out geometrically correct. This function was added to the project at a later time without any problems. It is software-based, thus allowing full image quality at any time. The Wings Platinum multi-display technology allows animations, images, videos, etc. at any size to be projected onto the corresponding displays. For Swiss Television, 10 Barco video projectors were used, but this could just as well be plasma screens, TFT's, etc. Soft edge masks allow unlimited scope for seamless pictures. Softedge Production and technology by Stumpfl (Wings Platinum) form a sound basis for the TPC AG (tv productioncenter zürich ag) for the years to come. Prolight+Sound: Hall 8.0, Booth J66

51)  Cabletime: 3 rolls out MEDIASTAR EVOLUTION

Mobile media company 3 has become the first customer to implement the brand new digital signage solution from Cabletime in its Threestores. The MediaStar Evolution Digital Signage Player, launched by Cabletime last month, was originally developed to meet the requirements of 3, which will use the technology in more than twenty of its new own-stores by the end of Q1. Instore, rich mobile media content is played on a series of five displays of different sizes placed on each side of the stores. AVE Systems, a specialist AV integrator worked closely with Cabletime to adapt their new IP-based delivery system to meet 3’s needs. Cabletime’s MediaStar Evolution, an IP-based digital video delivery solution, is designed to stream content over IP networks. 3, however, wanted to be able to deliver the content from its own content provider using its wide area network, and then allow it to be played out onto the screens from local storage. This enables 3 to tailor marketing messages locally. The use of the Cabletime solution in conjunction with content supplied by Realisation, 3’s content provider, allows synchronisation to a millisecond that can be downloaded and updated daily via a USB key. The system’s built-in ability to recognise new data and then synchronise across the respective screens enables the images to constantly change and thus maintain interest. The instore message is intensified most when there is the synchronisation across the 5 screens to create one image.

52)  InfoComm Study: AV Technology use growing

A study has found that the audiovisual industry in both Europe and North America is expected to grow dramatically between 2005 and 2006. The 2006 InfoComm Market Forecast Survey, prepared by AWP Research, found that revenue for surveyed North American companies is expected to grow by 40 percent in 2006, and by 10.7 percent for European AV companies. The single biggest factor for this increase is the increased demand for networked AV products due to the integration of AV und IT Technology. This is the fourth consecutive year that significant growth was projected for the AV industry. The global AV marketplace has never been stronger, InfoComm International says. The demand for streaming media, web casting, digital signal processing, wireless applications, and AV-related software has increased dramatically worldwide, the trade association of the professional audiovisual and information communication industries continues. The two leading markets for AV equipment in North America and Europe continue to be business/IT and education. Beyond the top two markets, a substantial difference in AV markets is evident when comparing North America and Europe. The benefits of AV, as cited by customers, are more universally shared on both sides of the Atlantic. These include the ability to provide business tools needed for a day-to-day activities, enhanced communication between internal and external audiences, increased efficiency, creation of a more effective learning environment, and saved time and money through increased efficiency. The 2006 Market Forecast Survey includes trends and findings in the North American and European Audiovisual Industry.

54)  G+B pronova: Lighting Architecture Reduces Energy Costs

Modern architecture is increasingly shaped by the use of transparent surface areas. This allows for considerably improved room lighting using daylight. The use of new and improved materials and systems enable the design of intelligent outer shells of buildings. New kind of glazing with little k-value and optimized g-value make considerable reduction of heat energy demand possible. Further possibilities of reduction can be seen with regards to room lighting. Through opening up the outer shell, buildings can be fed with natural light throughout the entire day as a result reducing energy costs that are due to the use of artificial light. Unfortunately, artificial light sources are misplaced in most cases (often close to windows) and therefore shine from the wrong direction, or are characterized by too high or too low intensity. Light-controlled elements in the building’s outer shell enable abandonment of lamps and their power consumption during the day. In order to plan and optimize an entire building considering various energy saving potentials, professionals offer comprehensive knowledge about usable materials and systems. New outer shell systems allow for considerable optimization of room lighting. At the institute for lighting and structural engineering at the technical college in Cologne (now called ZOT – Zentrum für Optische Technologien), scientists have adjusted and optimized an already existing technology for the use of light-controlled elements in outer shells. Holographic-optical elements are the basics in numerous application possibilities with regards to glazing. Due to cooperation with the G+B pronova GmbH, this technology could be used in further areas. The development of state-of-the-art outer shells offers unimagined possibilities: energy saving through buildings’ intelligent outer shells.
