Dear Newsletter Readers,

To the Table of Contents

In this issue of http://www.avp-newsletter.com/ you will find latest news about data- and videoprojection/-presentation. We will report about the trade fair for education and training, didacta, Cologne, 9th to 13th February, as well as first news for the CeBIT (18.-24.3.04).

1)     Didacta: more than 90,000 visitors!

After five turbulent days, didacta in Cologne ended with great success for all of the 811 exhibitors out of 14 countries on February 13th. This year’s didacta undoubtedly proved to be Europe’s largest educational fair with more than 90,000 visitors, a plus of more than 80% compared to last year’s show in Nuernberg. The success story: excellent visitors as towards quantity and quality, promising discussions with decision-makers, and a very good response to lectures and supporting programmes.

From 9th to 13th February 2004 in Cologne, didacta - The Trade Fair for Education and Training - once again featured the entire spectrum of teaching and learning in theory and practice. In the focus of visitor’s attention were, apart from new school books and CD-Roms, electronic teaching and learning software, laptops for the class and interconnected presentation technology. The entire range of educational products and services was presented on 65,000 square metres of exhibition space in four clearly structured theme areas, in halls 4, 11, 12 and 13: Kindergartens, Schools/Colleges/Universities, Training/Qualification and Continuing Education/Counselling.

According to provisional results of a visitor’s poll, almost 96% of the respondents came out of professional interest. The high quality of visitors was due to the fact that more than 80% of the visitors, according to their statements, were involved in purchasing decisions in the educational institutions, organizations and companies. According to an exhibitor’s statement, didacta 2004 has triggered off important impulses for the urgently awaited upswing. In this connection, the Cologne fairgrounds proved to be the optimal platform at an optimal location.

In parts of Hall 12.1 and 12.2, around 160 suppliers were presenting their new products and services, which range from equipment for training rooms, hardware and software for AV communications solutions, Web-based training, blended learning, monitoring education, temporary work and train-the-trainer programmes, through to new concepts and methods for continuing professional education and counselling.

28) ISE 2004 – successful first show – new venue in 2005?!

Having had a successful first show (3.2.-5.2.), Integrated Systems Europe is now planning where to hold the event in February 2005. This year's event attracted in excess of 3,000 high-quality trade visitors to Palexpo Geneva, and many of the 120 exhibitors reported higher-than-expected lead generation. However, exhibitors have expressed concerns about the Geneva venue - partly because of the high costs involved, and partly because it is not in the EU. As a result, the ISE management board is now considering other options for an early February date next year. Visitors from over 60 countries attended the event. The largest national contingent came from the UK, followed by visitors from Benelux. French and German groups came next, at around 10 per cent of the audience each. There was also substantial representation from Eastern Europe. Attendance at the show's education sessions was strong, with over 300 delegates taking in sessions held by participating associations ICIA, CEDIA and NSCA. Where should ISE be next year? Geneva, Amsterdam, Vienna and Barcelona are the options. To give your opinion, go to the poll at poll@iseurope.org.

30) TFCinfo: study LCD-TVs vs. Plasma

TFCinfo, the worldwide leader in AV market research, recently conducted an in-store survey that explored the buying preferences and attitudes towards LCD TVs and Plasma TVs. TFCinfo found in their in-store survey that pitted large LCD TV’s up against plasma displays that 85.6% of high-end shoppers are likely to buy a flat screen TV in the future. It is known that price is important to shoppers, however these high-end respondents did not place as much importance on price as many would have believed. Numerous times TFCinfo has heard “Basically, the consumer does not care about which technology; in the long term, the cheaper technology will win the battle and this will be LCD TV, even for the large screens.”  Respondents were surveyed on important buying factors, and price did not even make the coveted top five (1. image quality, 2. resolution, 3. screen size, 4. product lifetime, 5. warranty). TFCinfo’s “In-Store LCD TV vs. Plasma Study 2003” was aimed at understanding the level of desire, practical uses, and strengths & weaknesses - both real and perceived - of plasma and LCD TV held by A/V enthusiasts and early adopters. The study is available at TFCinfo, Edith Dow.

-   TLS with a world premiere on didacta

TLS Communication GmbH has presented a portable sound system with integrated MP3 player for the first time at didacta 2004 in Cologne. The M 100 MP3 is based on the modular system of the M 100 range. Like the other devices in this series, the M 100 MP3 has a 2-way system with 70/120 Watt mpo/rpm. This makes the box suitable for use in larger rooms and halls e.g. for sport and leisure activities, on stages and for presentations. Many hours of music can be played back on the M 100 MP3. The MP3 player does also play normal music CDs and even CD RWs. A mechanical anti-shock control ensures that there are no disruptions to the music. Tracks can be programmed in or repeated on the MP3 player. A file function means that individual music tracks can be easily found in the stored folders on the CD. A direct track search by entering a track number of up to three digits is also possible. The MP3 player bit rate is between 32 and 320 kbps and the sampling rate is 32, 44.1 and 48 kHz. The sound system has a flange for a floor stand and if required, is available as a version with radio receiver installed for a radio microphone. The stereo system can be completed with the active amplifier box M 100 LS Plus.
