CeBIT 2003 in recession

For the second time in a row the CeBIT has to expect a decline in the number of visitors and exhibitors. With 7074 exhibitors from 65 countries and a net capacity of 361000 square metres the CeBIT 2003 (12.-19.March) is going to have almost 900 exhibitors less than the year before, where 7962 exhibitors took part. Thus the CeBIT has lost about 11% of its exhibitors within one year. Because of the declining bookings the exhibition grounds of the CeBIT are going to be around 9% smaller as well.

In the year 2002 674.000 people visited the trade fair which is 150.000 less than in the year 2001! It is improbable that this number can be reached in 2003. But there is still hope. It is the first time that the CeBIT has exhibitors from 65 different countries. Just from Asia and Australia 1170 companies are going to take part ( more than 42% of the whole participators from abroad). They are going to cover more than 33.000 square metres. In spite of its losses the CeBIT was able to extend the gap between itself and competitive events.

The audio-visual presentation is going to take place in halls 1, 2 and 21 (video conference hall 13 + 27) and also the new built area “Digital Home Automation“ (hall 1) is going to focus on this theme. To be able to show  the growing convergence of technologies CeBIT  extended its exhibition program and presents the whole spectrum of digital products of the home automation area, from digital televisions and video players via projection systems, digital photography to home security and building automation.

8) New projector brands at RP Media

Two new projector brands complement the product range of RP Media Consulting in Viersen, Germany from now on. LG Electronics has been a supplier for many years and now also offers projectors and plasma monitors at RP Media. The fact that both companies are situated in the area of Viersen is only one reason for an effective cooperation. The products of ProjectionDesign come from Norway and the three projectors F1-XGA, F1-SXGA and ACTION! Are going to set new standards. The F1-SXGA with 3000 ANSI lumens, a weight of only 3 kg is a novelty and the noise development of only 28dB make the projector an absolute highlight. 9) IC: Christmas makes 32“ plasma prices drop

As a study of the company InterConnection shows, the average price of 32” plasma displays has dropped to 5.935 Euro. All in all one can see a trend downwards. 11) ProLight+Sound extends pilot project „Media WorkNet“

After the successful pilot project in 2002 the ProLight+Sound is going to present from March, 5th – March 8th, 2003 the „Media WorkNet“ again as one of their highlights: Diverse trade fair booths in different halls are going to be connected via a multi media light wave streamer network. Thus audio, video and light can be operated comprehensively and one is able to exchange data formats between the different locations. The heart of the whole consists of Cobra-Net, the soundweb, a Riedel-Artist System as well as an Ether Sound Network. Via a progressive architecture of the network structure, the systems are able to provide many possibilities for the exchange of different formats like audio, video or operating data in real time. The aim of the media project is to show the abstract subject “networks” with the help of concrete solutions. Up to now every technical method had its own language, a direct exchange without mediating protocols was simply not possible – which with regard to the growing complexity of tasks of the media and event production urgently needs solutions.

14) Toshiba: projectors in church

When father Valentin Hertle welcomes his community in the district of Miesbach near Munich with „Cool that you are here!“ some people might get confused. But he says this sentence with a wink, his masses are not quite normal after all but as he celebrates a “cross over multimedia” church service. Not only professional event technology is part of the mass but also a Toshiba data projector of the type TLP–B2 ultra is of good use. The device is used for the projection of video animations and video clips onto a screen in the nave. “With the TLP-B2 ultra, a good solution has been found, because the device is very easy to handle and also ensures a bright and sharp picture”, says Markus Gamperling, teacher for catholic religion at the high school of Miesbach and member of the cross over team. The TLP-B2 ultra (1250 ANSI lumens, XGA, contrast ratio 400:1,  2,6 kg) is equipped with an integrated speaker and all conventional RGB-, video and audio outputs. There is only one disadvantage: “Naturally in a church all distances are larger than in usual conference rooms or class rooms. Thus the remote control sometimes reaches its limits.” The double use in the high school in Miesbach and at the “cross over multimedia church services” ensured a quick amortization of the costs.

16) Samsung: CRT monitors are not out

“Things reputed to be dead, live longer” – this commonplace applies also for CRT monitors says the international high-tech company Samsung. Flat screens will further win more market share in comparison to the “good old tube” but will not displace the CRT monitors completely from the market. In the near future Samsung expects and disagrees with other prognoses. The cathode ray tube makes the device a lot heavier and more voluminous like the TFT screens but keeps a lot of advantages. A CRT monitor is able to display almost every resolution within its technical specifications without any streaks. New CRT technologies make tube monitors more and more attractive (DynaFlat X, Super Pigment Phosphorescence, HBC Focus, sharp-focus-aid S-CXO and coma adjustment as well as natural colour). Furthermore tube monitors are still much cheaper than flat screens in spite of the decline in prices at TFT Screens. “The demand for TFT flat monitors is going to rise  within the next couple of years and is probably going to level off at about 2/3 of the monitor market. The other 1/3 is going to stay reserved for the tube devices for a long time”, Frank Kalisch (Samsung) concludes.

18) pronova: Bath impressions with ProFess

The newly opened bath studio of Triton Belco in Munich contains a fascinating special: With an extra big ProFess back projection pane a back projection unity has been created, which makes an original 3D visualisation of the ideas of the customer possible. The 2,50m x 1,85m big ProFess pane by the company G+B pronova GmbH is installed in a closed wooden construction. With the help of deflecting mirrors and a complex media controller the dream bathroom of the customer can be visualized three-dimensionally in the computer and can be represented in its original size. The ProFess pane does not only have extraordinary projection possibilities but can also be used as a whiteboard and thus comments customer wishes or similar can be drawn onto the pane (and can be wiped off very easily afterwards). 19) MediaVision: innovative Infoterminal "MessageBook24"

The MediaVision MessageBook is a real attraction in the otherwise lethargic visual presentation market. After it had already been successfully introduced on the InfoComm in Japan in July 2002 the MessageBook24 had its final breakthrough at Photokina in September 2002. At present, plasma panels are usually utilized; but the MessageBook24, a virtual book installed in a standing desk invites the user to turn over the virtual pages. The viewer is attracted via eye-catcher effect of his back projection info terminal, e.g. in waiting lounges or entrance halls. The interior of the MessageBook24 is comprised mainly of a MediaVision RX 7000 back projector (2000 ANSI-Lumen, XGA, contrast 400:1, 80cm projection distance for a 50” image). Where ever things need to be explained at point of sales like shop windows, museums or banks, the MessageBook24 serves as an excellent service station.

20) Medium/ProjectionDesign: F1-mobile projectors for professionals

The company MEDIUM offers projectors of the company ProjectionDesign - a new highlight in presentation technology. The F1 SXGA and the F1 XGA are part of it. Both DLP projectors distinguish themselves via their extremely high brightness of 3000 ANSI lumens. The very compact design and the light weight make the F1 XGA an universal projector. With only 28 dB ventilation noise at full light power the F1 XGA sets new standards. Therefore the projector reaches an extremely high contrast ratio of 2000:1, which results in brilliant presentations for the user. The signal processing of the US manufacturer Faroudja which is already known from the professional area, guarantees a perfect signal transformation. Because of the fact that more than 20% of today’s notebooks are provided with SXGA monitors, the F1 SXGA react to this challenge with a physical resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels and therefore is able to display 66% more information than a XGA projector.

21) ict: Corporate Media Award 2002 for plasma pinball machine

A "Master of Excellence" was given to the BMW AG and the ict AG at the “Corporate Media Award” in Munich in November. The Award for video- and new media- related communication concepts was given to the multimedia “Plasmaflipper” that was developed by ict in corporation with the MKT GmbH. The pinball machine was conceived by order of the BMW AG for the MINI trade show appearance. All in all, the complete development from the idea to creation took only two month. The pinball machine was first used on the Mondial de l’Automobile 2002 in Paris. The interactive application is composed of two plasma displays which are controlled by a PC connected via network. One plasma represents the playing field, the second serves as scoreboard. The pinball machine is operated by panels. The virtual ball activates certain game graphics and videos that are displayed on the second plasma. They also demonstrate certain security devices of the MINI. 24) AVP-reader questioning / winner of the journey to Barcelona

The online AVP questioning from 15. November to 9. December 2002 has not only resulted important information but also showed the winner of the journey to Barcelona. It is Mr Detlev Kesel, manager of the company “office COMM-TEC”, who has already been informed about his prize by our cooperation partner InterConnection Consulting from Vienna. More than 70% of the readers questioned said that brightness/resolution of a projector is the most important criteria for their purchase decision. For 57% the price is still the most important criteria. Almost 72% of our readers buy directly at AV offerers (manufacturers, AV distributors, AV dealers), 7,2% buy from IT trade and only 0,7% in special electronic stores (Media Market…). AVP readers are well informed: people questioned said that InFocus, Barco, Liesegang, ASK, Christie, EIKI; Proxima, Plus and Optoma are specialized in projection technology. But their favourites are still brands that are not only known in the projector market (Sony 11,4%, NEC 9,5%, Toshiba 8%, Barco 6,8%, Epson 6,5%, InFocus 4,6%, Sanyo 4,6%, Sharp 4,2%, Liesegang 3,8% and ASK 3,0%).

28) NEC "3D-Reform": LT-projector series displays images in a straight line

The horizontal and vertical trapezoidal correction makes it possible to place a projector shifted from the  centre of the projected areas. This is especially handy if the audience is placed in the projection line, a ceiling construction is impossible or a column disrupts the ray of light. To serve this purpose, with the new LT-projector series NEC developed an especially simple and quick correctional method. As a consequence there are no loses in image quality as experienced with other correctional methods. “3D-Reform” by NEC functions via a processor that optimally interpolates horizontal, vertical and diagonal. It offers the user a simple interface: Via USB-mouse that is connected to the projector the user can choose up to eight junctions and move them. The projector generates an undistorted image. NEC allows a vertical image correction up to 40 degrees as well as a horizontal image correction up to 30 degrees.  That means that the projectors can be positioned in a 30 degree angle left or right to the screen.
